Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Military History

The George Mason University, Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (RRCHNM), invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Military History. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.

About the Position:

The Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (RRCHNM) seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital History who will work on research projects generated in collaboration with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). These projects will assist the DPAA's mission to provide the fullest possible accounting for the nation's missing personnel from past conflicts abroad. Prior experience as a creator of digital history products is a requirement for this position. Although postdoctoral fellowship terms at Mason are for one year, this position is funded for up to three years and so may be renewed for additional years at the discretion of the University.

The fellow hired for this position will join the team of digital historians at RRCHNM, a team that includes three other digital history postdoctoral fellows working on a wide variety of projects. We seek a scholar of the highest caliber who will bring new ideas, new energy, and a commitment to collaborative and collegial work at America's original digital humanities center.

This fellowship is a collaboration between two mission-driven organizations. RRCHNM's mission is to democratize access to historical information. Work at the Center is highly collaborative, including faculty, staff, and students in multiple projects and candidates should demonstrate a past record of working in teams and/or collaborative environments.

The mission of the DPAA is to provide the fullest possible accounting for America's missing personnel to their families and the nation. The DPAA fulfills our nation's obligation by maximizing the number of missing personnel accounted for, while ensuring timely, accurate information is provided to their families. DPAA's work is rooted in values that include compassion, integrity, teamwork, respect, and innovation. A top candidate for this position will have the interpersonal skills necessary to coordinate with a variety of stakeholders while adhering to DPAA's values and at all times maintaining respect for the sensitive nature of the work.

Responsibilities:

The digital projects the fellow will undertake will be either (1) identified by DPAA and assigned to the postdoctoral fellow for further development or (2) proposed by the fellow and approved by the DPAA. The DPAA will provide project oversight, policies, procedures, and templates for all research projects. The priorities of these projects will be determined by the DPAA. The fellows will provide regular updates to the DPAA, and occasional updates to other relevant parties.

The Postdoctoral Fellow may also be invited to contribute to the teaching of military history at George Mason as a guest lecturer or by conducting workshops for faculty. While the Postdoctoral Fellow will not have any required teaching responsibilities there may be an opportunity to teach up to one course per year.

Required Qualifications:

● Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in History by the first day of employment;

● Candidates must have prior experience as creators of digital history products.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Ph.D. in American History with a familiarity of modern military history;

● Experience working in teams;

● Teaching experience in digital history;

● Demonstrated thoughtful approach to teaching and learning history.

For full consideration, applicants must apply at https://jobs.gmu.edu/; complete and submit the online application; and upload a cover letter, resume, a one-page diversity statement, describing how the candidate will contribute to the university's mission and core values as a diverse public university (as Other doc), and a list of three professional references with contact information.

Candidates should engage with the mission statement of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (https://rrchnm.org/our-story/) in their cover letter. Candidates should also engage with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency's mission (https://www.dpaa.mil/About/Vision-Mission-Values/) in their cover letter.
