Part-time Deputy Sheriff Captain

(Applicants must have current DCJS Deputy Sheriff and Law Enforcement certifications.)

The Part-time Deputy Sheriff Captain will perform administrative and supervisory work for the Support Services Bureau. The work is performed in accordance with Sheriff's Office policy and General Orders, as received from a Chief Deputy, or other superior.

This position is assigned to the Support Services Bureau and oversees the detention center fire safety and sanitation, inmate food contract workers, ongoing projects for repair, replacement or maintenance of the detention center, inmate records, and inmate work programs, oversees inmate intake and classification, volunteer and inmate programs, inmate educational services, work release, modified work release, and electronic monitoring.

Illustrative examples of work
  • Reviews and comments on all documents and evaluations which are directed through the chain of command by subordinates
  • Oversees the management and progress of ongoing maintenance repair or renovation projects or arranges for the contracting of new projects in the facility as needed
  • Adheres to all facility rules/regulations, Virginia State Code, Federal Laws and applicable DOC and ACA Standards
  • Initiates the progressive disciplinary system
  • Conducts staff inspections as appropriate
  • Serves as member of the Senior Command Staff
  • Reviews Standard Operating Procedures and General Orders
  • Updates the Inmate Handbook
  • Informs subordinates of new laws, court decisions, office policies and their implications for operations
  • Attends security equipment seminars and exhibits and reviews technical literature
  • Prepares necessary records and reports; Reviews reports prepared and submitted by subordinates
  • Reviews all purchase orders for their correctness and compliance with office policies, and requisitions operational equipment and supplies
  • Prepares division budget and monitors budget expenditures
  • Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings
  • Conducts performance evaluations of and provides counseling and guidance to Deputy Sheriff Lieutenants and other subordinate personnel
  • Investigates inmate complaints and appeals of inmate disciplinary actions
  • Acts for Chief Deputy Sheriff in their absence
  • Performs related work as assigned


Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School diploma or GED, the demonstrated ability to manage people, must have previously served as a Deputy Sheriff Captain in the Support Services Bureau of the Alexandria Sheriff's Office.

Must possess a valid driver's license issued by their state of residence, must be up to date with mandatory in-service retraining prescribed by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Corrections, Law Enforcement, Management, Leadership, Business, Political Science or a related field. Experience interacting with a diverse community and internal/external stakeholders; exceptional supervisory and leadership skills; exceptional planning, preparation and organizational skills; and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Experience working in the Support Services Bureau of the Alexandria Sheriff's Office, familiarity of the detention center's ongoing projects and experience contracting for outside companies to perform necessary maintenance, repairs or replacement of equipment and utilities in the detention center.
