We are seeking a full time Psychiatrist to work with our nation's Veterans! You could be a part of an important initiative to provide mental health care to those who have served our country. Responsibilities

Clinical Duties includes but not limited to (BHIP/Outpatient):
a. Provides a full range of psycho-diagnostic services including assessment and the most appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques in providing quality care.

b. Performs psychiatric evaluations for a diverse population of patients of males, females, geriatric, and post deployment combat veterans who are mentally ill and have psychosocial issues that may include homelessness, unemployment, and poor family support network.

c. Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions to units/programs in the Community Based Outpatient Clinics to which the psychiatrist is assigned and has clinical privileges to practice including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, and overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, PTSD, substance abuse, and other psychiatric disorders in various clinical settings including the outpatient, inpatient, emergency department, primary care/mental health integrated programs, and hospital ward settings.

d. The Psychiatrist may serve as a mental health team leader with responsibilities for coordinating consults and triage of specialty clinic referrals.

e. Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members which enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care.

f. Orders diagnostic tests and consultations and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions.

g. Ensures that the practice of psychiatric medicine is consistent with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice psychiatric guidelines, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPPA policies.

h. Participates in supervision and teaching in support of the psychiatric residency program, performs on call duties, and performs other directly related duties as assigned.

Academic/Teaching
a. Involved in performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives.

b. Provides leadership guidance and consultation to staff.

c. Involved in the supervision and teaching of psychiatry residents and other trainees assigned to unit as appropriate.

d. Serves as a consultant to other medical center staff and trainees and assist in implementation of treatment plan as appropriate regarding their patients.

e. Is responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system, as appropriate.

f. Plans and oversees the completion of personal research programs, designed to provide information regarding program planning and relevant treatment approaches.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Staff Psychiatrist is a Licensed Independent Provider (LIP) who practices based on his/her specific approved privileges, guidance derived from VHA, Medical Center Bylaws and Service Directives/MCMS and is under the supervision of the Community Based Clinics Psychiatry Section Chief.
The Section Chief is responsible for providing administrative/clinical oversight, along with the annual performance appraisal.

Physician Staff Requirements. In addition to the experience above, the incumbent must demonstrate the following:

Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who can
give authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

Incumbent meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.

AGE, DEVELOPMENT, AND CULTURAL NEEDS OF PATIENTS REQUIREMENTS
The primary age of patients treated and cared for are normally at the age level of 18 - 60 years of age or older. The position requires the incumbent to possess or develop an understanding of the needs of these types of patients. Sensitivity to the special needs of all patients in respect to age, developmental requirements, and culturally related factors must be consistently achieved. Personal contacts and coordination with a wide variety of persons are essential to this position. Contacts are with patients, caregivers, family members, administrative and clinical medical staff, and community professionals.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical requirement: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
