Summary

The Salem VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Part-time (24 Hours) Physiatrist.

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) staff physician independently provides clinical Physiatric services to eligible veterans. Services are provided at the Salem VA HCS, in ambulatory care, outpatient and inpatient Medical Center programs. The incumbent is required to interact not only with the Veteran but also family, significant others, community agencies, and other staff.

Responsibilities

PM&R staff physiatrists shall assist the Chief of the PM&R Service in carrying out the mission of the Service.(1) The staff physiatrists will be responsible primarily for:
  • a. Inpatient care on inpatient rehabilitation unit CLC bed services,
  • b. Prescribing treatment for in- and outpatients referred by consultations,
  • c. Providing special tests such as EMG (electromyography) and other electrodiagnostic procedures.
(2) The physiatrists work closely with the patients, their families and all rehabilitation team members which include:
  • a. Rehabilitation nurses,
  • b. PM&R therapists,
  • c. Psychologists,
  • d. Social workers,
  • e. Speech pathologists, Audiologists and
  • f. Clinical and non-clinical staff from other services.
(3) If a residency program is in effect, the physiatrists are responsible for the teaching of the residents and the patient care provided by the residents.(4) The physiatrists participate in administration, committees, and the general teaching functions as delegated by the Chief, PM&R.(5) The staff physiatrist must be willing to serve as the physician designee of the Chief PM&R as needed.

Functions: Clinical: 90%-100% The incumbent is primarily assigned outpatient general physical medicine and rehabilitation clinics, to include musculoskeletal clinic, amputee clinic, spinal cord injury clinic, stroke clinic, and/or electrodiagnostic (EMG) clinic, and provides inpatient rehabilitation CLC ward attending coverage and rotating CLC WHEN hour coverage an as needed basis.

Administrative: 0-5% - dependent on programmatic assignments

Education: 0-5% of time spent directly teaching and coordinating resident or trainee activities in PM&R can be granted if the incumbent holds a faculty appointment at an affiliated medical school

Research: available as time allows

Supervisory Controls: Practices independently, using professional judgment and expertise to make decisions about services and treatment provided to Veterans and their significant others/family members. The incumbent reports to the Chief, PM&RS.

Qualifications: Age related Criteria:
Takes into consideration age-related differences of the various Veteran populations served:
a) Young adulthood (20-40). Persons in general have normal physical functions and lifestyles. Person establishes relationships with significant others and is competent to relate to others.
b) Middle age (40-65). Persons may have physical problems and may have changes in lifestyles because children have left home or change in occupation goals.
c) Older adulthood (65-75). Persons may be adapting to retirement and changing physical abilities. Chronic illness may also develop.
d) Middle old (75-85). Persons may be adapting to decline in speed of movement, reaction time, and sensory abilities. Also, persons may have increasing dependence on others.
e) Old (85 and over). Increasing physical problems may develop.

Computer Security:
a) Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy.
b) Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion.
c). Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc.
d). Uses word processing software to execute several office automated functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files; activating printers; inserting and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving e-mail.
e) Uses the Veterans Health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) to access information in the Medical Center Computer System.

Customer Service:
a) Effectively communicates with and utilizes other disciplines (e.g., nursing, medicine) to facilitate treatment planning and implementation.
b) With few exceptions, participates effectively in team meetings, treatment planning conferences, etc.
c) Collaborates with divergent multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (Part-time-24 hours) between the hours of 08:00AM- 4:30PM -possible weekend and holidays.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

License: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below.

Physical Requirements: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position.
