Summary

GAO seeks non-paid student volunteers to encourage interest in public service careers and provide valuable work experience. As a non-paid volunteer, a student will gain first- hand experience within GAO's work environment, learn about the federal government and perform a variety of tasks related to supporting GAO activities.

This vacancy is for Student volunteer internships for Spring 2021, Summer 2021 and Fall 2021

  • Plan and complete work assignments on time
  • Collect and analyze relevant information
  • Prepare quality draft documents
  • Communicate relevant and accurate information, clearly and concisely during formal or informal meetings

  • Contribute to team efforts
  • Use various enterprise tools and technology to prepare and share documents
  • Provide essential support such as arranging meetings, taking notes, responding to routine inquiries.

Student Volunteer Program Requirements
  • U.S. Citizen
  • At least 16 years of age
  • Actively enrolled at least half-time in a degree seeking accredited educational institution
  • Good Academic standing
  • Available to work at least 20 hours a week
  • Free from conflict of interest
  • Must be able to pass a valid background check willing to sign a non disclosure agreement
  • Continued enrollment in qualifying academic program for the duration of volunteer service.


Qualifications

In addition to the Key Requirements listed in this vacancy announcement the Student Volunteer must also possess the following qualities:

Ability to work well in a team environment

Ability to communicate orally and in writing to a variety of audiences

Excellent interpersonal skills

Ability to organize a variety of assignments simultaneously to meet deadlines.

A working knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.

Education

Student Status: Definition of a student- applicant must be enrolled in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, two year or four year college or university, graduate or professional school. You must be considered in good academic standing. Individuals must be taking at least a half-time academic, vocational, or technical course leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. "Half-time" is defined by the school in which the student is enrolled.

The purpose of the vacancy is to generate a pool of applicants for potential consideration for student volunteer positions, this does not guarantee selection.

Student Volunteers may work during the school year and/or during summer or school vacation periods. The nature of the volunteer assignment as well as the work schedule will be established once on-board.

Telework eligibility will be reassessed at the start date

This position does not offer salary, benefits, or conversion to permanent employment.

Travel and relocation expenses related to this hiring process will not be paid.

GAO reserves the right to discontinue the volunteer experience at any time.

Individuals selected will be eligible to receive transit subsidy.

High School Students - High school report card that supports current proof of enrollment. If current proof of enrollment is not listed on the report card, you must submit proof of registered courses (screen shot) along with the high school report card.

College/university and vocational/tech students - Transcripts (official or unofficial) that supports current proof of enrollment, semesters/quarters and number of hours completed. If current proof of enrollment is not listed on the transcripts, you must submit proof of registered courses (screen shot), enrollment from the college or university's registration system or official letter from Registrar's Office.

If you are a first-year college student and do not yet have a transcript, you may submit proof of enrollment from the college or university's registration system or official letter from Registrar's Office.

For minors age 16 or 17: If selected for a student volunteer position, you must also submit a work permit prior to coming onboard.

Foreign Education- If you are submitting a transcript from a non-US educational institution, applicants must submit all necessary documents to a private U.S. organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials, commonly called a credential evaluation service. If you are selected for a student volunteer position, you must provide a copy of your most recent report card and/or an Official transcripts on the day of your orientation or within 3 business days immediately following your orientation. These documents must show your current student status.

Failure to meet the requirements or provide documentation as stated above may result in termination of your student volunteer internship.

If you are relying on your education to meet qualification requirements:

Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications. Therefore, provide only the attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education .

Failure to provide all of the required information as stated in this vacancy announcement may result in an ineligible rating or may affect the overall rating.
