Responsibilities

As a Legal Administrative Specialist in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), you will Provide legal, administrative, and technical support to attorneys in the SAUSA Unit. Duties may include:
  • Open, organize, and manage physical case files.
  • Prepares charging documents in collaboration with attorneys.
  • Develop, track, and enter various case materials into an electronic docketing database.
  • Conduct technical research on the outcomes and status of court proceedings.
  • Run sensitive reports and track data.
  • Coordinate bi-annual case certifications.
  • Prepare a variety of legal documents.
  • Track and manage dispositions.
  • Provide trial support and run courtroom presentation programs.
  • Monitor electronic filings that are assigned to attorneys.
  • Track ongoing post-conviction matters.
  • Prepare SAUSA appointments and open network accounts.
  • Research and analyze court decisions for complete and accurate dispositions.
  • Assist in collecting, organizing, processing, redacting, and producing documents, electronic files, and other materials required for criminal discovery.
  • Log, track, and conduct quality control checks of incoming, processed, and outgoing discovery materials.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: One full year of Specialized Experience, Education, OR a Combination of Education and Experience.

Specialized experience is defined as experience performing Legal Administrative Specialist or legal work which demonstrates a knowledge of the full life-cycle of criminal prosecutions, from investigations to charging, discovery, pre-trial motions, trial, post-trial motions, appeals, and post-conviction motions. Qualifying experience involves performing some of these duties: examining, preparing and editing a variety of legal documents and correspondence; using a variety of electronic or manual filing systems to acquire and store information and monitor cases to ensure compliance with due dates; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, compiling witness and exhibit lists and providing trial presentation services; researching a variety of legal sources to obtain and/or verify information; using automated software applications to produce legal related reports, documents, correspondence, conduct research and prepare courtroom presentations; and/or searching and reviewing case files, and other sources for information and data required by attorneys or court personnel.

OR

Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law): a Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.); OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year.

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
