The Staff Accountant II, General Ledger will assist with the monthly, quarterly, and annual close accounting processes, which includes preparation of journal entries and general ledger account reconciliations for both consolidated and non-consolidated legal entities with an emphasis on the most technically challenging areas. The Staff Accountant II, General Ledger will also support invoicing of government contracts and grants, participate in annual compliance reports, special projects and automation projects. Ensure accounting records are in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)Evaluate new or existing accounting guidance as neededAssist with documenting the Company's accounting policies and proceduresComply with financial internal controlsPrepare monthly account reconciliations and validate the accuracy of account balancesResearch and resolve account discrepanciesProvide appropriate supporting documentation for account balances Prepare journal entries with work papers necessary to support the accuracy of the entryPrepare monthly invoices and summaries for government contacts and grants in accordance with government agency requirementsParticipate in automation projects which may include: automating bank reconciliations, implement lease accounting software, automate revenue recognition calculations, implementing incentive compensation management system, and others.Engage with representatives from other MSD departments to identify necessary accruals for the monthly closeCommunicate frequently with the General Ledger Team to discuss accounting or other issues that may impact the timeliness and/or reliability of financial resultsAssist with year-end audit preparation, ad hoc reporting, and financial analyses as required Assist the Controller and Assistant Controller with research on GAAP pronouncements.Perform other duties as assignedBachelor's degree in AccountingA minimum of 4 years of accounting experience or 2 years of public accounting experience.Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA candidate preferredExperience with government contracts and grants a plusStrong knowledge of accounting fundamentals to include Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the ability to document and adhere to accounting policies and procedures. Knowledge of government accounting standards a plus.Strong analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to gather and evaluate complex data and information and develop a recommendation and plan of action.Proficient in working with accounting systems and designing and maintaining spreadsheets and data bases with a focus on Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft ExcelAttention to detail with demonstrated commitment to excellence and performanceExcellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues of varying complexity, while meeting time-sensitive deadlines and deliverablesExcellent communication skills with the ability to organize, present, and articulate ideas both verbally and in writingAbility to maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers, and display good interpersonal skills - cooperative, courteous, flexibleThis position requires the ability to communicate and exchange information, utilize equipment necessary to perform the job, and move about the office.This position is performed in a traditional office environment.
