Administrative Assistant

The George Mason University, Office of University Counsel, is seeking an Administrative Assistant to provide direct administrative support to the attorneys and staff in the legal office. Responsibilities:

  • Represents the office professionally in all internal and external interactions and communications when receiving, screening and directing incoming telephone calls and visitors to the legal office;
  • Maintains office attorneys' calendars and prepares supporting documentation and materials for meetings;
  • Oversees coordination of travel arrangements, completing related reimbursement transactions;
  • Oversees the procurement process including purchasing supplies as needed, approving purchase requisitions, maintaining and reconciling credit card statements and tracking of expenses through budget reconciliation process;
  • Assists in drafting and preparing legal documents and other correspondence;
  • Oversees the processing of legal documents to local courts or to the Office of the Attorney General;
  • Provides administrative and liaison support to the Office of the Attorney General;
  • Coordinates and processes all outside counsel billing;
  • Maintains and manages the office filing system, to include maintaining records in the legal department matter management system and archiving of records;
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications:


  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Must have excellent analytical and writing abilities and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Clerical and computer proficiency is required (i.e., word processing, database and spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat);
  • An understanding of legal and court processes and procedures;
  • An understanding of case management, legal filing systems, document production and other aspects of trial litigation;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor;
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree and/or paralegal certificate, or equivalent combination of education and work experience;
  • Prior legal work experience.
