About the Division of University Life's Student Success Coaching:

The Division of University Life's Student Success Coaching unit is a hub for student engagement for all first-year freshman and transfer students. The Student Success Coaching unit promotes increasing the retention rate of incoming students by connecting students to campus resources and helping students set and achieve academic, career and personal goals. The unit provides incoming students access to ongoing mentoring, advising, and coaching from professional and student staff that maintains university-wide and college-specific knowledge to ensure the success of Mason's incoming student population.

About the Position:

Reporting to the Assistant Director for ADVANCE, the Success Coach will oversee the implementation, execution, and day-to-day supervision of the student services and success components of the ADVANCE program. The Success Coach must have a strong understanding of the partnership between Mason, the other commonwealth institutions, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), and be able to leverage that knowledge to ensure students are able to take full advantage of the program. The Success Coach will lead efforts to assist participating students throughout the duration of their time in the program.

We seek a candidate who is able to lead change and innovation in a complex environment, support the development of professional staff, collaborate across colleges and departments, and contribute to the overall goals and objective of the unit.


  • Serves as constant and immediate source of support for students; highly visible, extremely accessible, well known, and available at Mason, NVCC campuses, and online;
  • Monitors student progress and performance, analyzes problem areas, determines solutions and conducts intervention activities and processes for students;
  • Provides proactive advisement and coaching for continuing students in the ADVANCE program;
  • Provides base level academic advising for students as they transition into Mason fully; advises on initial use of 4-year course sequencing plans and refers to major-specific advisor upon full transition to campus.;
  • In collaboration with campus retention efforts, implements student success and retention strategies; matches students with the appropriate resources to aid in their success;
  • Trains students and assists in their development and understanding of Mason and co-institution policies, curricular and co-curricular opportunities in order to optimize their experience;
  • Provides support for student and campus engagement through familiarity with campus programs and resources, involvement opportunities, and career development support;
  • Interprets and provides rationale for institutional policies, procedures, and requirements;
  • Collaborates with Enrollment and Orientation teams to facilitate the successful transition of students into institutional activities at both George Mason University and co-institutions that aid in student success;
  • Works with a variety of individuals on campus to understand, monitor and convey all aspects of curriculum, sequencing, scheduling, registration, university policies and procedures, and student concerns and needs;
  • Assists students daily with solving a wide-range of problems in navigating institution and program infrastructure;
  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of the student experience to include, enrollment, advising, student services and retention; works collaboratively with teams of professionals who will inform, advise, and identify pathways for admitted and current Advance program students for early integration, support, and degree completion;
  • Monitors and records progress of individual students, maintaining records of individual student data in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA);
  • Ensures timely turnaround of services, unit benchmarks, customer service standards, and key performance indicators while achieving performance goal;
  • Identifies systemic barriers that inhibit student progression through programs, and works to eliminate procedural barriers at all levels of institution.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • At least two years of professional experience with or demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: academic advising, success coaching, orientation, disability services, veteran's services, career services, student involvement, and student rights and responsibilities;
  • Familiarity with cognitive development theory of college age students and/or career development theory;
  • Experience working with transfer students, particularly adult degree students;
  • A proven track record working in Student Affairs, Student Services or Higher Education Administration;
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems, coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events;
  • Ability to analyze course prerequisites and graduation requirements;
  • Ability to work successfully with special student populations including, but not limited to, first-generation, veteran, low income, adult, and underrepresented individuals;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in managing academic student success programs and services;
  • Familiarity with Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) software, database software and student information systems;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills as well as strong student service orientation required;
  • Ability to work independently as well as function as part of a team;
  • Ability to analyze problem situations, identify feasible solutions, and present recommendations in a concise, logical, and systematic manner;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and sophisticated understanding of issues affecting the academic achievement and retention of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience serving and supporting diverse student populations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Success coaching certification;
  • Master's degree in higher education, Student Personal, Counseling or related field;
  • Experience with educational database management systems and customer relationship management systems (CRM);
  • Prior experience in academic advising or working with student coaching programs;
  • Demonstrated experience with leadership, communication, program development, and administrative skills in their previous experience and interview process.
