Drupal Web Developer

The George Mason University, College of Science (COS), invites candidates to apply for the Drupal Web Developer position. Responsibilities:

Under general direction, the College of Science Web Developer participates in the detailed design, construction, implementation and support of web projects that meet established specification, design criteria and quality standards for special College of Science web projects. This position exists primarily to facilitate web design, content SEO and performance optimization and programming in order to increase the college's presence on the web.

The Drupal Web Developer will provide support and development for the college's Drupal 8 website and will advise and assist with other external websites including WordPress. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring our site remains responsive, accessible and secure while enhancing both backend and frontend features for our content providers and editors. The successful candidate will also be responsible for guiding best practice website architecture and helping create a visually appealing and intuitive interface for our visitors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree or certificate in Computer Science, Web Development, Programming or a related field, or equivalent work experience;
  • Three years of Drupal development experience and one year of Drupal 8 experience including site building, administration and maintenance;
  • Experience building user interfaces for websites and/or web applications;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of front-end technologies such as HTML, HTML 5, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery and Json;
  • Experience working with PHP and JavaScript;
  • Experience working with databases like MySql;
  • Ability to integrate Drupal with external sites and applications;
  • Ability to understand CSS changes to have consistent style across platforms and browsers;
  • Ability to architect Drupal solutions including data display and information architecture;
  • Advanced site-building experience including Drupal modules such as Views, Paragraphs, Panels and Layouts;
  • Knowledge of the Drupal theme layer;
  • Flexibility to adapt to change and willing to learn and develop new skill sets as applicable;
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently from a remote location with little supervision;
  • Strong time management, project and professional organizational skills;
  • Ability to collaborate, compromise and work in a challenging academic environment serving often conflicting audiences (internal and external) and stakeholders.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting Drupal in a cloud environment, specifically hosting on Pantheon;
  • Experience upgrading Drupal 8 to Drupal 9;
  • Experience converting Drupal Paragraphs to Layouts;
  • Familiarity with Acquia Site Factory;
  • Experience working on higher education web development projects;
  • Experience optimizing Apache Solr search;
  • Experience supporting and developing in WordPress;
  • Willingness to travel to make onsite visits and attend occasional training and conference events;
  • Experience training and developing documentation for new Drupal users and content editors.
