About the College of Science:

The George Mason University, College of Science (COS) is the largest research unit within the university, constituting of approximately 30 percent of the total research portfolio. With a mission to produce science that enhances society, create clear career pathways for Mason students, and enhance economic development in the region and the nation, COS undertakes pioneering research endeavors that offer insight and solutions to the complex issues that challenge today's world.

About the Position:

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Assistant Director of Development will be primarily responsible for growing the College's annual unrestricted revenue through engaging alumni and friends. In addition to the focus on annual giving, the Assistant Director will serve as a collaborative member of a dynamic and results-oriented team.

Responsibilities:


  • Generate new donors from current alumni base and proactive prospect research.
  • Cultivate and steward current donors and increase donor engagement through donor evaluation and direct contact;
  • Work with the central university office of annual giving on COS specific appeals;
  • Work with the COS Development Team and the Office of Alumni Affairs and the COS development team to create and execute effective ways of engaging COS alumni through events and communications;
  • Maintain ongoing communications with prospects and donors through written correspondence and personal visits;
  • Coordinate development special events and activities;
  • Assist as needed in other COS development events, programs and activities, many of which occur on weekends and evenings;
  • Identify, recruit, train and manage volunteers;
  • Serve as a liaison between the COS Alumni and the COS faculty;
  • Foster communication between COS alumni and academic units.


Required Qualifications:

  • Some experience working in a Development capacity;
  • A solid understanding of the donor engagement process;
  • The ability to motivate others, work effectively with groups and individuals, strong attention to detail, and the ability to adapt in a fast-paced, multi-faceted, and dynamic organization.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in either a higher education or non-profit setting;
  • Experience working with major gifts officers to identify annual donors capable of making major gifts;
  • Experience supervising the efforts of volunteer groups;
  • Familiarity with general Development databases, reports, and protocol;
  • Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree.
