ESL Instructor

The ESL instructor supports the school’s mission by providing excellent in-person and/or remote instruction that supports students’ diverse educational backgrounds, learning styles, English language, and technological abilities. The Instructor is responsible for creating materials specific to the assigned level, selecting class textbooks, designing a class syllabus, and writing daily lesson plans to directly address all student needs. The Instructor is expected to engage with multiple forms of data, both formal and informal, to help students advance academically. Additionally, the role of the ESL Instructor requires the management of key data points and other administrative responsibilities that extend beyond the time spent teaching.

Responsibilities:

• Assists students in acquiring the English language skills necessary to advance to the next

ESL level

  • Provides life skill instruction that allows students to navigate important systems and

    resources both online and in-person in Washington, DC

  • Implements in person and/or remote classroom policies and procedures

  • Provides for different learning styles and abilities through differentiated instruction

  • Encourages students’ active participation and regular attendance both in-person and synchronously/asynchronously

  • Monitors student progress through TEAAL and CASAS tests

  • Creates course syllabus according to content-based Carlos Rosario Curriculum, TEAAL and

    CASAS pre-test scores, and student goals

  • Prepares clear and concise daily lesson plans including objectives and both synchronous and

asynchronous activities, available to supervisors

  • Creates a positive in-person and/or distance learning environment for adult learners

  • Monitors and evaluates student performance and modifies instruction accordingly

Must be able to model good English pronunciation

  • Prepares lesson materials and instructional aids

  • Works with classroom para-educator if applicable

  • Works with tutors if needed for student success

  • Co-plans with CALL Lab Instructor for technology skill development and e-portfolio completion

  • Keeps daily attendance records current in the Student Information System

  • Accurately fills out tracking forms and submits them in a timely manner

  • Develops and uses an e-portfolio assessment to help document student progress.

  • Keeps track of student goals related to academic progress and employment

  • Conduct student conferences at least twice during the semester (mid-semester and end-of- semester)

  • Attend faculty meetings and professional development

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements:

• Must have at least two of the following:

o Teaching Certification
o Master’s degree in Adult Education, Linguistics, TESOL, language studies or related field
o At least three years of teaching experience

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Proficiency in technology skills that include website navigation, windows management, online learning tools (Zoom, Remind, GSuite, etc.), and Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Experience in ESL and Adult Education preferred

  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in both ESL preparation and Adult Education

  • Must be flexible and able to make adaptations to meet the academic needs of students with different learning skills and challenges

  • Work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds

  • Excellent communication skills, be able to explain concepts to others effectively

  • Excellent organizational skills and timely completion of tasks

  • Fluently speak, read and write in English

  • Knowledge and experience using Windows and Internet Explorer

Schedule:
Monday – Friday 9:00 am– 12:00 pm & Monday – Thursday: 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm Monday – Thursday: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
