The Washington Post is hiring a Software Engineer for our Video, Audio and Photo engineering team. The media team works across the spectrum of public-facing video and audio players as well as tools that are essential for the work of our media producers and reporters. Our ideal candidate is fearless with their ideas and communicates thoughtfully and compassionately. This team is looking for engineers who are motivated to learn new technologies and expand their skillset.

  • The Media team is an agile organization employing scrum methods to continuously build and deploy software applications that allow our newsroom to edit and produce captivating stories.
  • Washington Post Engineering is a department of more than 600 people working to support The Post's world-class newsroom.


Responsibilities
  • Empower our editors to rapidly produce engaging stories by closely collaborating to build features across both the front-end and the back-end of our audio, video and photo content management systems.
  • Deliver a seamless and engaging user experience by engineering new features and optimizations for our custom built audio and video players.
  • Integrate photo, video and audio content across The Post's publishing landscape and platforms by finding creative storytelling methods in collaboration with Product and Design teams.
  • Build an integrated and flourishing ecosystem of micro-services to deliver content to our readers by participating in technical architecture discussions.
  • Support the Post's business interests by integrating advertising technology in our audio and video players.
  • Support the reliability of our core infrastructure as part of the on-call rotation for live events.


Minimum Qualifications
  • 1-2 years of software engineering experience
  • Experience with the React and/or Angular framework.
  • Working knowledge of writing Javascript and CSS for modern desktop and mobile browsers.
  • Some exposure to to Node, Python or Java backend environments.
  • Eagerness to explore and learn new programming languages, tools and applications.
  • A passion for collaboration and team exploration when tackling complex engineering challenges.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building web applications on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Prior work with DevOps technologies like Docker, Jenkins, and other AWS Products.
  • Experience with end-to-end testing frameworks.
  • Experience incorporating analytics instrumentation and enabling A/B testing
  • Familiarity with Javascript module bundling technologies like Webpack.
  • Excellent communication, documentation and presentation skills for other engineers and our newsroom stakeholders.
  • Experience in agile software development teams working iteratively with designers, product managers, and stakeholders.
