Summary

About this Position:

This is a Flexible position located at the Russ Child Development Center on Joint Base Langley-Eustis, VA (Langley). Flexible positions are "part-time" and can work 0-40 hours per week. This position may be subject to on-call, nights, days, holidays, and weekends work.

The purpose of this position is to perform manual labor tasks involving the use of common hand tools and simple power equipment.

Responsibilities

Performs one or a contribution of the following manual labor tasks:
  • Loads and unloads heavy boxes, bulky supplies, and materials to and from tracks, dollies, etc. Moves heavy boxes, cartons, or luggage by hand, handtruck, or dolly; opens crates and boxes using crowbars, and cuts bands using shears; stacks boxes and cartons where directed.
  • Using a shovel, digs ditches and trenches where a pick is not needed to loosen the dirt, and where the dirt, and where grading and sloping is not required; fills holes with dirt and levels bumps and low places, using shovel, hand tamper, and rake.
  • Runs hand lawnmowers or ( domestic type) powered lawnmowers, when this does not require heavy physical effort (for example, on steep grades); clears small trees and bushes, using handsaw, hatchet, or clipper.
  • Moves and arranges furniture as directed; shovels snow from sidewalks; washes and waxes cars and trucks by hand or power buffer.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
CONTROLS OVER WORK: Supervisor provides specific instructions for new tasks, after which incumbent may independently complete duties involving several distinct tasks or steps. Supervisor may check work in progress or review results of finished projects.

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE: A certain degree of manual skill is required in using necessary hand tools and in operating simple power equipment. Continual care must be exercised by the incumbent because of the nature of the tools and equipment used, and weight of the objects handled.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderately heavy physical effort is required in occasionally lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and in pushing heavy furniture, loading carts, etc. Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside or outside, occasionally in bad weather. If indoors, may be exposed to dirt and dust. Chance of serious injury (e.g., broken bones, severe cuts, strained back). Continuous standing, walking, stooping, or lifting is required.

Performance is reviewed primarily on the basis of results achieved, i.e. timely and accurate completion of assigned tasks. Performance is reviewed for compliance with established regulatory standards. Exhibits courtesy and tact in dealing with patrons, co-workers, supervisors and leadership. Adheres to established standards of dress, personal hygiene, and conduct. Must demonstrate dependability and perform expected duties in appropriate amount of time. Adheres to and enforces fire, safety and security standards.

  • This position requires incumbent to provide a copy of their HS diploma or equivalent.
  • This position requires incumbent to be at least 18 years of age.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and one every three years thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience:
No previous experience or training is required. Must be able to use, control, and clean common hand tools, and simple power equipment. Must be able to follow oral and/or written instructions involving duties with several distinct tasks or steps. Must be physically able to frequently lift and carry medium to heavy objects up to 40 pounds, and be able to occasionally lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds. Must be able to actively bend, stoop, stand, reach, and work in awkward positions. Position requires current state Drivers' License. Incumbent must satisfactorily complete pre-employment physical. Position requires satisfactory completion of required security investigation(s). "This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject lo random testing/or drug use."

Education

Must be a high school graduate, or equivalent; and be able to provide proof (i.e., diploma or equivalent) for verification.
OR
Must be a dependent of a Service Member or a DoD Civilian who is 17 years of age and pursuing a High School Diploma.
