This position is located at Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, ENFORCEMENT. As an Enforcement Economist, you will conduct complex data and economic analysis and use econometric models and compliance analytics on difficult and complex topics related to consumer financial markets.

Responsibilities

As an Enforcement Economist, you will:
  • Provides expert advice to attorneys; supports and participates in drafting discovery requests; helps select, works with, and supports external testifying expert witnesses; and provides testimony in support of the CFPB's cases, as appropriate.
  • Takes full technical responsibility for independent analysis projects and research plans through their entire lifecycle, including but not limited to identifying issues, assessing different potential methodologies, assembling data sets, completing analyses, and presenting results.
  • Develops data, document, and narrative response requests to obtain information for economic, statistical, mathematical, and econometric analysis of investigational subjects' acts and practices for conformance with consumer financial protection law.
  • Independently identifies potential problems in consumer financial markets and anticipates the need for economic knowledge and plans accordingly.

    You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

    Specialized Experience: For the CN-60, you must have at least one year of specialized experience performing Economist functions equivalent to the CN-53 level (For qualification purposes, the CN-53 is broadly equivalent to the GS-13) that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience is defined as:
    • Planning and executing economic research projects, using appropriate theoretical models, statistical and analytical techniques (such as statistical analysis, geospatial analysis, or predictive modeling; AND
    • Using statistical packages, such as SAS, STATA, SPSS, Tableau, R or SQL; AND
    • Conducting data and economic analyses on topics related to consumer financial markets; AND
    • Compiling and analyzing macro data sets to construct tables or graphs that capture key findings.

Salary may be set from the minimum of the salary range to the midpoint of the salary range.     Education

    Basic Requirements:
    • Degree: Economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
    OR
    • Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
  • Examples of qualifying experience include: (a) individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation; (b) supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information; or (c) teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and one of the following (1)personal research that produced evidence of results, (2) direction of graduate theses in economics, or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.
  • Experience in related fields that did not involve the use and understanding of economic principles and theories may not be used as qualifying experience for these positions. Special attention on this point should be given to certain types of work that may or may not have provided professional economic experience. The following examples of work require special care in such determinations: (a) economic statistics; (b) industrial surveys; (c) management of individual business enterprises, including farms; (d) industrial planning; (e) writing or editorial work in economic subjects; and (f) financial market analysis. The education must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
