  • The work routinely imposes the need for significant departures from established practice in state-of-the-art computer technology in combination with an understanding of monitoring processes for social insurance programs.
  • Serves as a principal planner and advisor to management related to the development, implementation and oversight of major systems changes and initiatives.
  • Provides analytical and advisory services involving one or more information technology specialties including: communication and network services; customer support; data management; software engineering; and/or systems administration and analysis.
  • Provides technical direction and leadership in implementing state-of-the art networking topology, other new technologies, and computer techniques that are coordinated with SSA systems, external government entities and contractors.
  • Serves as a technical lead and principal liaison specifying systems requirements, platform implementation, hardware/software requirements and technical support.
  • Pursues implementation of changes that involve independently justifying, defending and/or negotiating agreements on behalf of management.
  • Leads other specialists in technical analysis, development and implementation of nationwide hardware standards for equipment including servers, LAN equipment, workstations, laptops and other peripheral equipment, as well as associated software.
  • Develops and reviews system design approaches for new or redesigned systems, conducts code inspections for new or modified code and oversees the preparation of testing and validation criteria.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for this GS-14 IT Specialist (SysAna/SysAdm) position are based on
(1) IT Competencies required for the GS-2210 series AND
(2) Specialized Experience.

(1) IT COMPETENCIES - you must demonstrate each of the following IT-related competencies:

Problem Solving -- Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations.

(2) SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have at least 52 weeks of Specialized Experience as described below. This experience must have been gained in a federal position at or above GS-13 OR (if your position/experience is in another federal payscale or outside of federal service) by performing duties at a level equivalent to those performed in a federal position at or above GS-13. This Specialized Experience must have provided you with the specific knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the functions of this GS-14 IT Specialist (SysAna/SysAdm) position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is work that primarily consists of applying analytical processes to the planning, design and implementation of new and improved information systems to meet the business requirements of customer organizations, as well as work that involves planning and coordinating the installation, testing, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of hardware and software systems.

TYPICAL DUTIES involve configuring Windows and Linux servers and services, producing automation scripts for configuration/maintenance and supporting, maintaining and troubleshooting Internet Information Services (IIS) and apache web servers to support application developers.

IT Specialists in this SysAna/SysAdm position are responsible for:
- consulting with customers to identify and specify requirements;
- developing overall functional and systems requirements and specifications;
- defining systems scope and objectives;
- ensuring the integration of all systems components; e.g., procedures, databases, policies, software and hardware;
- planning systems implementation;
- planning and scheduling the installation of new or modified hardware and operating systems and applications software;
- managing accounts, network rights and access to systems and equipment;
- resolving hardware/software interface and interoperability problems;
- ensuring systems availability, functionality, integrity, and efficiency; and/or
- managing the installation and integration of systems fixes, updates and enhancements
