Description/Job SummaryReporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Plumber position is primarily responsible for work in the trades of plumbing, steam fitting, air conditioning and refrigeration. The incumbent is required to perform general maintenance tasks, such as simple construction, preventative maintenance, improvements and minor repairs to buildings, fixtures, and mechanical equipment. The Plumber is expected to perform specialized tasks approaching the journeyman level in the plumbing trade. This position is designated as Essential and is required to report for emergency situations.Responsibilities/DutiesMake minor repairs and alterations to mechanical and building equipment; responsible for troubleshooting, conducting appropriate repairs on mechanical equipment, performing emergency repairs to buildings, water and sanitary systems using various approved materials, including schedule 40, plastic, copper, brass, glass, clay, and galvanized pipe as required.Install, replace, and maintain plumbing fixtures and other equipment as required; check and maintain sewer lines, conduct periodic cleaning of traps and change filters.Make minor repairs to fixtures, steam pipes and fittings including toilets, flush valves urinals, floor and sink drains.Maintain domestic and storm water lines and rain leaders for proper flow, clean sanitary and storm drain piping; perform roof and roof-drain inspections and keep drains clear.Assist in the preparation of specifications for obtaining contractual plumbing services and coordinate with contractors; prepare requisitions for ordering supplies and materials; coordinate work activities with other maintenance personnel.Perform other assigned duties and fall within this job classification such as caulking doors and windows; cleaning and lubricating mechanical equipment and machines; wash, brush, sand and scrape interior and exterior walls, ceilings, floors, and other building surfaces; apply paints, varnishes, stains, waterproofing agents, and other protective products; patch block, brick, and stone walls.Required EducationHigh school diploma, with plumbing license required. Unlicensed plumber with seven (7) years or more experience may be considered.Required QualificationsExperience: Three (3) years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades provided that at least two (2) years of the candidate's experience are primarily within the plumbing trades at the journeyman level.Technical Skills: Working knowledge of other building trades, including electric, refrigeration, steam fitting. An ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications; knowledge of plumbing codes; knowledge and experience using appropriate tools of the trade such as pipe cutters, automatic drain openers, hand and power assist tools, air compressors and lubrication equipment, brazing and soldering equipment.Abilities: Effective verbal and written communication, and ability to coordinate work activities with other maintenance support personnel and to work unobtrusively and professionally in occupied areas.Working Conditions:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions such as heat, cold, snow, and rain, dirt, and steam. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Exposure to operating machinery consistent with working in a maintenance department. Physical Abilities:The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:Ability to work in noise, heat, cold, odors, dirt, outdoor temperatures, snow, steam, and emergency situations.Ability to detect odors such as gas, etcAbility to repetitively push and pull objects weighing up to 75lbs without assistance while kneeling, squatting, reaching above the head, the waist, and below the knees. Must be able to bend at the knees.Ability to repetitively grasp and manipulate objects of varying size and weight requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.Ability to exert oneself physically over sustained periods of time to complete job activities.Ability to stand a minimum of 6 hours during the workday.
