Clinic Administrative Medical Assistant

The George Mason University, Student Health Services Department invites applications for a part-time Clinic Administrative Medical Assistant position. About the Department:

Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University (GMU). SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at GMU, including but not limited to, initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis.

About the Position:

The Clinic Administrative Medical Assistant supports the efforts of all three SHS clinic locations and shares day to day administrative and clinical responsibilities at the Arlington and Fairfax SHS Campus locations.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports students in need of health care services, provides excellent and exemplary customer service to both internal staff and external customers and represents SHS as a liaison between medical staff/visitors and front desk;
  • Directly supports SHS mission by, answering phones, scheduling appointments, checking students in and out of the clinic, communicating with nursing staff to maintain good patient flow, providing medical records scanning and maintenance, and by providing administrative support to the Business Manager, Clinic Coordinator, Associate Administrative Director, Associate Medical Director and Executive Director as assigned;
  • Participates on committees as designated, which may include, CQI, Risk Management, Infection Control and New Hire Interviews. The clinic administrative medical assistant provides input for policy and procedure process changes or revisions to the Clinic Coordinator;
  • May support the nursing team by completing patient intakes and other clinical duties in times of unexpected staffing shortages.


Required Qualifications:

  • Medical Assistant certification or equivocal training and experience;
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology;
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills, including Microsoft office, Excel and Outlook;
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one year of medical office experience in a hospital or health care setting;
  • Experience and knowledge of unique needs of a college student;
  • Experience with obtaining patient history, vital signs and chief complaint;
  • Basic knowledge of Adolescent and Adult Immunization requirements;
  • Experience with Electronic Health record and Telehealth;
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records and records management;
  • Experience in payment handling, patient check-in and patient out procedures;
  • Ability to prioritize and to facilitate cohesiveness & team work;
  • Healthcare Provider BLS certification.
