Academic Programs and Communications Coordinator

The George Mason University, Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (GGS) in the College of Science invites qualified applicants to apply for our Academic Program and Communications Coordinator position. About the Department:

The Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (GGS) offers Bachelor's (BS and BA), Master's, and Ph.D. degrees, as well as several Graduate Certificates. Our programs serve a diverse student body, including traditional students, returning professionals, and aspiring academics.

Responsibilities:

The GGS Academic Programs and Communications Coordinator provides support to the Chair and the Undergraduate, Graduate, and Distance Education Coordinators with respect to Academic Affairs, such as overseeing curriculum and assessment updating, academic advising, academic planning, graduate student academic management, and graduation audits. The incumbent also leads all department marketing and communication efforts, including development and outreach initiatives and social media campaigns.

  • Maintains faculty and student files;
  • Oversees all academic support functions to include, course and classroom space scheduling, reporting of grades, monitoring the progress of graduate applications, and cataloging reviews and updates;
  • Leads outreach and communication efforts both within, as well as outside of Mason including the development of marketing materials and resources;
  • Management of the GGS website and social media channels;
  • Cross-trains with other departmental functions to provide the best possible service to our faculty, staff and students.


Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of training and professional experience;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated experience working with a diverse population;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a timely manner.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Familiarity with GMU's administrative and academic policies;
  • Experience with Ellucian Banner and Blackboard;
  • Experience with admissions programs, such as TargetX;
  • Experience working in Higher Education;
  • Ability to effectively utilize and navigate database and spreadsheet software;
  • General knowledge about the structure and typical requirements of graduate programs in a university;
  • Experience with Content Management Systems (CMS) and/or web-editing;
  • Knowledge of social media channels (including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others) to increase the department's exposure to current and new students, and the scientific communities.
