Payroll Assistant

The George Mason University, Office of Human Resources and Payroll seeks a detail-oriented and organized team player to provide payroll support and processing as a Payroll Assistant. Responsibilities:

This position is part of a larger employee service team and is responsible for the full-range of payroll processing activities, to include:

  • Payroll reconciliations
  • Overpayments
  • Taxable Travel Refunds
  • Taxable Graduate Tuition Waiver
  • Unclaimed Property
  • Monitor payroll email accounts
  • Serving as the Timekeeper Administrator
  • Customer service related to the payroll function


Applicants should desire to work in a team environment, where priorities change rapidly and customer service is considered essential.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Superior communication, organizational, prioritizing and customer service skills;
  • Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material;
  • Problem-solving, analytical skills and mathematical ability;
  • Detailed Oriented;
  • Ability to build collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with people of different backgrounds;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • 2-3 years of experience in an accounting environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Payroll Professional;
  • Experience with the Ellucian Banner system or an equivalent in-house system;
  • Experience working in a high-volume payroll office environment.
