Job Description

The Newsroom Engineering team is seeking a consultant, with a deep background in campaign finance, to assist with tooling to make Federal Election Commission (FEC) data available to journalists in the Post newsroom. The overall project will consist of downloading, parsing, loading, and querying campaign finance data from the FEC.

Initial responsibilities:
  • Attend weekly backlog refinement meeting for one hour, to help refine architecture decisions and participate in planning.
  • Assist with developing a large, diverse set of test data.
  • Assist vetting database solutions and technology, including writing test queries.
  • Performing code reviews.
  • 1-2 scheduled "office hours" where the team can ask questions and solicit feedback on solutions.

Possible future responsibilities (depending on the team's needs):
  • Contributing to our FEC codebase.
  • Writing and conceiving of unit tests.
  • Optimizing the performance of our parsing software.
  • Additional consulting work on transforming or loading data.
