Responsibilities
- Independently works on a wide range of warehousing activities, including receiving, storing, selecting, and shipping general or specialized bulk and bin materials and equipment.
- Loads and unloads shipments from trucks and other material conveyances using fork lifts, manual and mechanized pallet jacks, side loaders, stacker cranes, and automated guided vehicles in mechanized warehouses.
- Checks, assembles, and processes documents, and routes materials and equipment to the correct locations or storage areas.
- Using a broad general knowledge or warehouse plans and procedures, stacks, moves, and arranges items on pallets considering height, weight, and special handling requirements.
- Assembles and dismantles shelving, bins, and worktables; loads, moves, unloads furniture and office items, using protective wrappings, packaging, and unpacking items.
- Ensures the proper handling, storage, and accountability of excess or surplus property to prevent damage, loss, or personal injury.
- Handles multiple tasks simultaneously and on an ongoing basis, prioritizing and completing assignments within established deadlines.
- Ensures material is properly stored by accurately matching, checking, and comparing data on storage instruments with materials to be stored against materials already in storage locations.
- May assist higher graded and specialized employees with operating moving equipment to move large items of furniture or equipment.
- May operate and perform routine maintenance on warehouse tractors, fork lifts, tugs and trucks, and other general purpose vehicles.
- May work in hazardous materials or sensitive material storage areas where specialized handling and storage procedures must be learned and followed as required by regulatory and safety requirements.

- PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent of this position will be required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time; and to bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. May lift and carry items that weigh up to 40 pounds on a recurring basis. Heavier items are moved with weight-handling equipment or with assistance from other workers.
- WORKING CONDITIONS: The work of this position is performed inside a warehouse Office Building or outside, in an open storage area, or receiving or shipping loading dock. Work areas may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. Regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapers, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. The incumbent is required to wear safety equipment, such as hard hats, steel toed shoes, and gloves as appropriate when working. The incumbent is responsible for obeying all safety and health rules and using such protective equipment as is necessary to protect his or her health. Protective equipment is furnished by management.
