Summary

This position is located at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, Security Divisions in Washington D.C. The primary purpose of this position is to perform various security related functions at the AFRH.

Responsibilities

As a Security Guard, you will:
  • Respond to emergency and or routine calls within the AFRH
  • Tour the entire facility of the AFRH on foot and or by patrol vehicle
  • Report any unsecured building(s) or room(s) to your supervisor
  • Write ticket citations for parking, speeding and any and all other traffic violations
  • Check the authorized personnel into a log book and keep traffic flowing at a reasonable flow

    You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

    Physical requirements: The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular and recurring standing, bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting and repositioning Residents. Must use proper body mechanics when lifting objects and use lift equipment for Residents. The work may require considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as lifting objects greater the 50 pounds or defending oneself against physical attack.

    Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.

    Specialized experience is fifty-two (52) weeks of experience at the GS-04 level or equivalent in other public or private sectors, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
    Specialized experience for this position includes experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Forces or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular basis.
    In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
    For the GS-05, you must have been at the GS-04 level for 52 weeks

    Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    - A one year probationary period may be required.
    -Must successfully complete a background investigation.
    - Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency
    - If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
    - Have your salary sent to a financial institution of your choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
    - Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form I-9 . Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
    -Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
    -Pass a pre-employment physical examination. An OF-178 , Certificate of Medical Examination will be required if selected for this position. DO NOT SUBMIT AT TIME OF APPLICATION.
    - Shift Work: This facility operates on a 24 hour per day, three-shift basis. Assignment to a specific shift cannot be guaranteed. The successful applicant must be available to work on all three shifts on a rotational basis.
