Responsibilities

Under direction of the Chief, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Service, performs administrative duties of supervision for a group of advanced DRTs' and AMSA's at the GS 10 level and below; Is responsible for directing unit activities, technologists and ancillary personnel. Clinical duties in assigned modality (s).

The main functions of the work are to supervise the technologists to perform routine and specialized imaging procedures, to maintain and improve the quality of current imaging . procedures; to develop new methods in response to medical center needs, and to administer the technical areas to provide efficient service and timely accurate results.

The incumbent is responsible for the efficiency and quality of imaging services, for maintenance of the records required, and for the preparation of reports on imaging operations. He/she also has the responsibility for instructing technologist trainees and resident physicians in the theory and practice of imaging procedures to include quality control. He/she must keep informed on current literature, new procedures, and new technical developments

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable.
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
  • English Language Proficiency: Be proficient in written and spoken English.
Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements listed above, applicants must meet the grade requirements for Supervisory GS-11 Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist.

EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of experience equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in Federal Service, directly related to the position being filled, that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. Examples of qualifying experience include, but are not limited to: provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor, evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations, informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic radiologic area

Candidates must also demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs:

i. *Ability to develop and initiate new imaging services that apply current research findings.
ii. Ability to participate as an instructor in the facility's in-service clinical training findings.
iii. [Ability] to interview and evaluate candidates for positions in the section and recommend appointments, advancements, or, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
iv. Ability to evaluate performance, identify continuing education and training needs, etc.
v. *Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation.
vi. [Skill in participating in organizational facility initiatives, workgroups, and/or committees.
vii. Ability to draft and/or recommend organizational policies and/or directives.]

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, but does require walking between workstations within the Imaging Service. There may be extended periods of time using and sitting in front of computers. There may be periods when bending and kneeling may be required. There may be extended periods of time when there will be work in a cold computer room. Duties may require lifting and carrying computer equipment (approximately 45 lbs) such as monitors, computer processing units (CPUs) and unix processing system (UPS) products.

Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.
