Job Announcement

Provides the full range of extensive customer service including outreach, reader advisory, circulation, and information/information referral services to targeted customers of the Access Services library (AS), Government Center employees and the public. Provides trainings on library systems and assistive technologies. Communicates and interprets library polices to the public, staff, and volunteers. Serves as Person-in-Charge as assigned. Performs other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of Fairfax County Public Library.

Note: The assigned functional areas of this position are general administrative support, library services, customer service, and education.

This job announcement may be used to fill multiple vacancies and may be used to fill future vacancies.

Salary: The selected applicant's starting salary will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($39,663.31- $52,883.58) of the advertised compensation range.

Schedule: Library schedules staff to cover all open hours and outreach. Occasional overtime may be required.

Scheduling & Coordinating for Others
Maintains calendar(s);
Schedules meetings;
Makes and cancels appointments;
Schedules rooms for classes, meetings, conferences, etc.;
Coordinates audiovisual, training equipment, refreshment requests.

Office Management
Provides administrative support and implements procedures;
Provides and explains relevant policies and procedures.

Receptionist/Public Contact
Explains departmental policy/procedure but does not interpret them;
Responds to inquiries that require referencing a variety of sources and utilizing
knowledge of the department/county operations.

Word Processing/Typing
Keys/types complex documents (e.g., technical);
Proofs spelling and grammar.

Information Systems/Software
Performs data entry with some knowledge of department/work unit/program;
Manipulates screens for additional entries;
Generates routine reports;
Creates simple spreadsheets;
Maintains databases.

Reports
Compiles routine factual/numerical reports using readily available information.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation and two years of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Two or more years of library experience in a public library setting or school, to include readers' advisory experience. Foundation of knowledge in American literature, past and present.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check. Child Protective Services Registry check, and driving record check.
  • Ability to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church.
  • All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemptionprior to their start date.Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or religious reasons will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Otherwise, vaccinated employees will complete the attestation online in the first day of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist and shoulder movements. Ability to stoop, bend and reach. Ability to stand for 2 hours at a time. Ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book bins filled at 90% capacity, requiring 20 pounds of initial (starting) force, and a sustained force of 10 pounds after initial acceleration. Ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book carts filled at 70% capacity, requiring 14 pounds of initial (starting) force, and a sustained force of 7 pounds after initial acceleration. Ability to shelve materials at all height levels. Physical requirements are applicable to all duties. Ability to communicate in person, in writing and via phone. Ability to drive a van/car from the County pool. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
