The Fairfax County Health Department is the largest public health department in Virginia, serving 1.2 million residents from diverse ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds throughout Fairfax County, as well as the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church and the towns of Herndon, Vienna and Clifton. Works as part of the Health Outreach Team to expand partnership engagement and community health education within assigned cultural and ethnic populations of Fairfax County. This position provides community engagement, capacity-building, outreach, networking and health promotion and prevention education to various ethnic communities, interfaith communities, non-profit organizations, hard to reach populations, and small businesses. Initial work will advance the public health agency's pandemic response, particularly in COVID-19 vaccination equity efforts. Longer term work activities will center on advancing population-based interventions aimed at addressing the root cause and social determinants of health known to negatively impact health outcomes. Establishes and sustains community partnerships and cultivates collaborative efforts to leverage community assets and improve population health metrics. Engages community leaders as health champions who work collaboratively to inform and develop sustained public health strategies and projects that address community health needs. Aids in the development and dissemination of public health education materials, evaluation of agency strategies and partnerships, administers health surveys, supports data collection and informs written reports. Ensures health education and communication services are culturally informed, provided in compliance with agency standards of care and local, state and federal regulations. Performs outreach to Fairfax County, Falls Church, and Fairfax City and advances the mission, goals, and objectives of the Fairfax County Health Department.

Note: Multiple positions may be filled from this advertisement. The hourly rate offered will not exceed the mid-point ($36.78) of the advertised compensation range, commensurate with experience.

This position is considered "Emergency Services Personnel" and will require occasional evening and weekend work.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelors degree in health education, human services, or a directly related field; plus one year of experience in communicable and/or chronic disease education, investigation or other types of health-related work involving considerable public contact.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Preferred candidates will have a Master's degree in public health, education, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience working in community settings in projects that require engagement and/or presentations.
  • Ability to speak a language other than English fluently, with the ability to translate materials as necessary.
  • Experience performing outreach work in the Asian/Pacific Islander, Black/African, Middle Eastern or Hispanic communities, focused on health promotion and prevention.
  • Bilingual capabilities, both oral and written is highly desired.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Driver's License (Required)
  • CPR (Required within 60 days)
  • AED (Required within 60 days)


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or religious reasons will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Otherwise, vaccinated employees will complete the attestation online in the first day of employment.

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services registry check, and driver's record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature, however, job entails walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs, reaching and bending; uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Employee may be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. Ability to drive a motor vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license. Ability to communicate with others verbally and in writing. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
