Land Development Services (LDS) is the steward of the county's land development and building construction codes and regulations, and its staff members embrace their essential role as "first preventers." Every day, through careful review, permitting and inspection of site and building construction, our staff protect the health, safety, welfare, and environment for those who live in, work in, and visit Fairfax County. Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 30,000 building and site plan submissions, issuing nearly 70,000 building permits, and conducting over 220,000 building and site inspections each year. The mechanical plan reviewer independently reviews and approves mechanical plans, designs and specifications for commercial, multifamily, single family, and miscellaneous structures, for compliance with Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, Fairfax County Codes and Department of Land Development Services policies, built/altered/ modified in Fairfax County for issuance of permit for construction. Performs other related duties as required under Deputy Director, Building Division.

Review plans for new buildings, alteration of existing buildings, interpret codes and explain to inspectors, designers, contractors, building owners on as needed basis to assist them for submitting/correcting code compliant plans. To participate in code development process, code modifications, and attend professional bodies meetings, as directed, either virtual or in person on as needed basis.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to build strong professional contacts to help achieve goals of the department/division. Ability to understand and apply values and work ethics of the building division on regular and daily work. Ability to work towards the vision, mission, and goals of the LDS

Employment Standards

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Mechanical Plans Examiner -Required within 18 months
  • Electrical Plans Examiner or Plumbing Plans Examiner-Required within 36 months

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
Ability to telework when necessary and directed by management.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement.   • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of Mechanical, Plumbing and/or Electrical codes and construction techniques.
  • Ability to understand and perform complex engineering calculations.
  • Substantial experience in building construction and / or design complying with Virginia Mechanical and Plumbing / Electrical codes.
Ability to perform sedentary tasks for extended periods. Ability to review plans on desk, on computer screen, for long hours. Ability to lift and move heavy plans up to 25 lbs. from one location to another.
Ability to operate key-board driven equipment. Sufficient mobility to perform on-site building inspections. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Panel interview and may include practical exercise.
