The American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research (AEI) is seeking a full-time mid-level data visualization specialist/storyteller to be part of our communications team. The ideal candidate is a take-charge individual who thrives on taking raw data and transforming it into compelling narratives and visuals for a wider audience. He or she will take data from our researchers and create and edit visual content, including charts, graphs, maps, and online interactive content, to help tell the story visually so it has the greatest impact.

AEI, located in Washington, DC, is one of America's premier think tanks. The work of our fellows and staff advances ideas rooted in our belief in democracy, free enterprise, American strength and global leadership, solidarity with those at the periphery of our society, and a pluralistic, entrepreneurial culture. As a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, AEI relies on donations from individuals and organizations to support this critical work.

The ideal candidate:
  • Has an interest in public policy and will thrive in an information-rich environment;
  • Has a constant curiosity and drive to make data compelling to all audiences;
  • Can manage multiple projects from start to finish and has excellent time-management skills;
  • Is an independent worker and a team player, receptive to feedback;
  • Can analyze raw data and organize it for the appropriate output, online or print, to create clear, compelling visualizations from complex data, including charts, graphics, infographics, interactives, and dashboards;
  • Has a background/interest in design and has created projects that are visually impactful;
  • Has the ability to adapt and learn new technical skills as needed for the visual output requirements;
  • Can develop online tools for internal and external customers;
  • Has strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Has advanced proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel;
  • Has experience with mapping and visualization software (ArcGIS, Flourish, and Tableau, for example);
  • Has experience with CSS/HTML, Java, R, Python, and D3;
  • Has strong technical skills;
  • Has experience with Salesforce (a plus, but not a necessity);
  • Has at least 3–5 years' experience in a related field with shown leadership and a strong portfolio; and
  • Will work on-site in our DC offices.
