Policy, Research and International Affairs leads the development and communication of AARP's public policies and, research and insights on the issues that matter to the 50+.
Summary

The Global Aging Director serves a critical role as a thought leader and international expert on global aging issues, including elevating innovative programs/policies in developed and developing countries related to key areas of interest, including, but not limited to, health security, financial resilience and social connections. This entrepreneurial leader and subject matter expert will lead cutting-edge research, bring in and push out new insights affecting older adults, cultivate new relationships and strategic alliances, represent AARP at international events and engage with colleagues across the enterprise to promote AARP's thought leadership and vision in service of older adults everywhere. AARP International works to strengthen AARP's position as a global thought leader by challenging the status quo, cultivating new ideas, and inspiring bold solutions to shift the paradigm so that all can make the most of a longer and healthier life. AARP International engages global stakeholders to challenge and change how the world views and values aging, and to spark solutions that enable people everywhere to pursue their goals and dreams. Working with the private sector, international institutions, civil society, and national and subnational governments, we elevate aging in the global public discourse, identify and share innovations from around the world, and engage new audiences and partners to help achieve our mission.
Responsibilities
  • Brings deep expertise related to global aging and one or more of the key global trends ( e.g. , health security; financial resilience; social connections; the human rights of older persons; and the impact of aging in lower and middle income countries), and has a deep network of contacts they can tap in related areas.
  • Leads a portfolio that includes expansive global outreach; identifying, developing, and cultivating strategic relationships that drive impact and relevance; promoting AARP's image and brand as a global thought leader; and supporting a global effort to elevate issues around aging with new audiences, stakeholders, and influencers.
  • Takes a systems approach to lead change, is a strategic thinker, and has the credibility to leverage opportunities with new or nontraditional partners to extend AARP's voice and drive impact.
  • A thought leader and substantive expert in global aging, the Director stays abreast of all emerging global trends that may have an impact on aging and demographics - and develops and leads efforts to shape the international debate and discussion, both within the public sphere and the private sector.
  • Entrepreneurially employs a variety of means to influence policy, promote global aging as an opportunity, and elevate AARP's perspective among key global thought leaders - including through convening public and private conferences and roundtables, commissioning, writing and publishing cutting edge research, leveraging influencers and expert stakeholders, and through effective communication.
  • Effectively leads expert collaborations and can persuasively and effectively write and speak on our issues to lead and influence the debate.
  • Identifies policies, promising practices and innovative solutions from around the world and seeks opportunities to share these insights with colleagues and stakeholders in the United States via speaking engagements, forums, various writing platforms, and social media. Conversely, the Director will amplify and elevate the best U.S. practiced and policies with public and private-sector leaders around the world.
  • Leads, writes and commissions leading-edge research and can manage entire project lifecycle including multiple vendor relationships, contracts, budgets and budget forecasting for several, simultaneously ongoing projects.
  • Collaborates with internal colleagues and leverages AARP resources and talent in international engagements and research.
  • Serves as a leading voice for AARP at international events, including speaking at panel discussions and conferences on global aging and related subjects.
Requirements
  • Completion of a Master's or an advanced degree in international relations, economics, public policy, demographics, and/or related field, and 10+ years of experience; or an equivalent combination of related training and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and deep understanding of international policy, international institutions, and the international marketplace of ideas, particularly in one or more of the areas related to aging.
  • Deep expertise in one or more with issues related to the global demographic trends of aging, in addition to broad familiarity with the field (including financial resilience, health security, equity and longevity, and wellbeing of older persons); in addition, the Director will have a strong understanding of international organizations, stakeholders, systems, policies, and issues.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, with an understanding of systems and collective impact approaches to leverage change.
  • Proven project development and planning skills; and strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate strategic plans and visions to others.
  • The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter, a collaborative team player, a creative problem-solver, and be driven by a strong sense of AARP's social mission.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple programs and projects, partner contracts and deliverables, and relationship management to successfully achieve short- and long-term goals.
  • The successful candidate will have a strong EQ, with a proven ability to manage and work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse, fast-paced environment, leveraging relationships and resources across the organization.
  • The Director will have extensive international contacts with experts and influencers in the field of aging, and demonstrated comfort with establishing, building, and maintaining relationships with other key stakeholders.
