Responsibilities

• You will carry out, direct and support Research Investigations into topics having significant impact on present and future Navy USW/ASW/MW requirements.
• You will design and carry out experiments to test theories newly advanced by the marine geophysical community including participating in collaborative events and authoring papers.
• You will coordinate development of advanced computer algorithms and software to be used in data collection and analysis.
• You will present research results in many forms and forums.

Qualifications

You will serve as a Senior Scientist in the Acoustics Division, 710000 at the NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY

This position has a Selective Placement Factor, you must demonstrate this Selective Placement Factor in order to be considered for this position: experimental and theoretical research experience in geophysical, geological, and oceanographic phenomena as they relate to Undersea Warfare and Mine Warfare problems.

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NP-02 (GS 5-10) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent specialized experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) performing and overseeing R&D, testing and product development for the design, emplacement, mission planning and performance predicting of USW systems; 2) collaborating within the marine geophysical community to participate in studies, provide consultation, author/co-author papers to ultimately make large contribution to relevant programs; 3) performing the developing of advanced computer systems for collecting, processing and analyzing of data collected by acoustic and sonar systems, and; 4) presenting research results in a variety of forms, journals and reports to sponsors to ensure continued support. This will be evidenced by a strong background in marine geophysics/geology with proficiency in marine geomorphology and geophysical survey design; experience with the use of multi-beam echo sounder, sub-bottom profiler, sidescan/synthetic aperture sonar instrumentation and the processing, and analysis of data from such systems.

Education

You must meet the following Office of Personnel Management (OPM) requirements for entry into the 1313 series:

A bachelor's degree (or more advanced degree) that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.); OR, possess a relevant combination of education and experience -- courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

This position is authorized for situational telework only.

This position requires 75% of duties in the lab and 25% of duties aboard ships and aircraft.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
