Position Information
Arlington County's Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Athletic and Facility Services Division (AFS) is hiring two (2) permanent Sports Rovers to support operations of indoor and outdoor facilities located within County Community Centers, County Park/Athletic Fields and/or at Arlington Public School properties. This position will work collaboratively with Arlington Public Schools (APS) staff to troubleshoot issues that arise during DPR programs taking place in APS facilities.

Specific duties include:

  • Cultivating relationships with DPR partner organizations to ensure safe and appropriate use of athletic fields/facilities/parks;
  • Traveling in county vehicles to complete daily rounds of assigned facilities around the county to make observations in parks;
  • Providing excellent customer service and timely response through effective communication via the after-hours phone and responding to the calls in a timely and efficient manner;
  • Supervising activities at multiple facilities such as special events, leagues, rentals, and other programs/services;
  • Providing support to County Facility Monitors located on fields, in parks, and at Community Centers;
  • Participating and assisting in planning and team meetings with the Athletic and Facility Services Division Leadership for upcoming events;
  • Discussing patterns of behavior and or continuous issues that are arising in Parks and other facilities;
  • Opening and closing multiple facilities throughout the County;
  • Collaborating with internal and external County Partners and working collaboratively with the Parks and Natural Resources Division (PNR) and the Park Ranger program;
  • Completing nightly reports, including data collection to provide to their immediate supervisor;
  • Acting as on-site contact for park users in emergency situations and providing coordination with the Police Departments and Fire Departments.
The ideal candidate will be a responsible, self-motivated, patient, customer-oriented person who enjoys working with a culturally diverse population and have the ability to do the following:

  • Make appropriate decisions in a fast-paced environment, able to cultivate relationships and represent the Department during constituent calls;
  • Possess excellent communication skills to deescalate and resolve conflicts and issues at the facilities or on the field, and enforces County policies, rules, and safety regulations;
  • Provide valuable feedback to their supervisor and to the Athletic and Facility Services Leadership team on what they see and trends that are occurring in the parks; and
  • Have the knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply Arlington County Park rules, safety regulations and administrative policy.

Please note: The Sports Rover will primarily work 40 hours a week on both weekday afternoon/evenings and weekends with their core hours being from 2:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturday and Sunday 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Selection Criteria
Minimum: High school diploma or a GED certificate and one year of experience in facility monitoring or related duties in a recreational program, law enforcement, security etc.

Substitution: A post-high school degree in one of the following fields may substitute for the experience requirement: Parks and Recreation, Environmental Education, Natural Resource Management, Biology, Wildlife Sciences, or closely related science field.

Desirables: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the following:

  • Providing direct customer service to the public;
  • Law enforcement, Security or similar experience; and
  • Knowledge of recreational sports leagues and parks and recreation facilities.

Special Requirements
The employee will be driving a county vehicle and therefore must obtain, by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence and the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record. The applicant must maintain a good driving record and pass the County's Defensive Driving course. The employee must maintain Adult CPR, Child CPR, First Aid and AED training.

A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

If appointed to the position, the employee will wear an assigned uniform and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Some positions may require walking or standing for long periods of time.
