Job Description

The Audience Development and Analytics department drives strategic and operational decisions for The Washington Post.  This highly visible team applies analytics and research to support strategic initiatives and day-to-day operational support company-wide and is currently seeking a Data Analyst.

As a Data Analyst, you'll report to the Manager of Analytics and work in close collaboration with the newsroom, marketing, product, engineering, advertising and finance departments on a diverse range of projects that have a critical and strategic impact on all aspects of the company. You love solving open-ended problems by taking mountains of data and transforming it into meaningful analysis aimed towards identifying solutions and opportunities. You are happiest in a role that allows you to solve problems where business, math, technology, and practical intuition converge.

  • Develop KPIs and success measurement plans for the VP of Subscriptions by working with stakeholders across departments.
  • Ensure metrics for the VP of Subscriptions are appropriately defined, implemented, and tested across our digital assets by working closely with Engineering, Product and Marketing teams.
  • Gain critical insights that drive business decisions by designing, building, and maintain key periodic reports, dashboards and analyses utilizing reporting and visualization tools.
  • Inform decision making on the growth and retention of subscribers by developing best practices and approaches to answer ad hoc questions on online user behavior, customer journeys, engagement, conversion data and multi-channel attribution.
  • Drive data informed decision making at all levels of the organization by assisting in various testing and optimization efforts through in-depth and ad-hoc analysis of information from multiple internal and external data sources.
  • Inform and educate stakeholders, including executives, by preparing and presenting reports and analyses in a compelling and succinct manner.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related technical discipline
  • 2+ years of data analytics experience, with a strong preference for experience in web analytics
  • A strong quantitative, creative, and problem-solving mindset
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize projects, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise in SQL. Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL on cloud is a plus
  • Expertise in Hadoop, R, Python data analysis packages to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets
  • Expertise in Tableau, R Shiny, D3 or other visualization/ reporting tools
  • Expertise with enterprise Web Analytics systems and media/ publishing industry experience is preferred
