Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for a strategic and results-driven business development professional who is passionate about expanding the Post's digital subscriptions business among younger and more diverse audiences as part of our Next Generation initiative.

In this role, you will source, negotiate, and enter into agreements with partners and will be responsible for managing the full life cycle of those relationships. The emphasis will be on acquiring and driving growth among new, younger and more diverse audiences. This role will also handle third-party relationships that are strategic in nature or are purely revenue-focused.

Responsibilities
  • Identify and seize emerging opportunities to acquire and grow key audiences for The Washington Post via partnerships and collaborations.
  • Source, structure, negotiate and execute partnerships with entities across the spectrum (e.g. other media, individuals and celebrities, entertainment brands, technology products and services) that will help drive digital subscriptions volume and revenue.
  • Own the end-to-end relationship with partners and maintain key strategic contacts and existing partnerships.
  • Produce quantitative and qualitative analysis of partner performance to drive KPIs, lead business reviews with partners, and ensure the delivery of sustainable high impact results.
  • Analyze the market to prioritize target partners, present business cases and negotiate partner agreements.
  • Provide thought partnership and advisory support for Next Generation leadership, with a focus on emerging technologies, audience behaviors and macro trends


Requirements
  • 8+ years of partnership or business development experience, ideally in a media, tech or start-up environment
  • Demonstrated ability to see business development opportunities through from prospecting and negotiations, to term-sheet stage, contract redlines and execution
  • Experience creating basic financial models to evaluate partnerships
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport within the organization and beyond it
  • Experience interpreting legal documents, negotiating contracts, and working with attorneys to complete agreements
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams to orchestrate and successfully complete deals
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, always-on, highly ambiguous environment
  • Creative, resourceful, detail-oriented, and highly organized
  • Interest in and understanding of target growth audiences
  • Global mindset

  • Knowledge and expertise in the nuances of a subscriptions-based business
  • BS/BA degree, MBA a bonus
