Temporary Laborer I

An Overview
A Temporary Laborer I performs general, unskilled, manual work of a routine nature tasks for in the Park Operations Division in the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities. The duties outlined will require physical vigor and the ability to follow given specific work instructions. The Laborer I will be under constant supervision and will often assist Equipment Operators, Laborers II and III in their various tasks. Many of these tasks will be time sensitive. Assignments are outlined in detail by a supervisor, standard procedures are followed, and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation.

What You Should Bring

Your ability to perform functions citywide in both outdoor and indoor settings. Knowledge and some experience in grounds/landscaping or custodial work. Engage in medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move, lift and push objects. Perform work that requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing and pulling. Capability of working in various outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

The Opportunity
  • Assists with all aspects of general park mowing
  • Assists with winterization on all water systems e.g., pools, irrigation systems, fountains, hose bibs;
  • Clean restrooms and picnic shelters.
  • Constructs, installs, and maintains park facilities
  • Operates small hand tools such as drills, saws, blowers, grinders, shop vacs, and weed eaters;
  • Paints equipment, special projects and litter cans;
  • Perform routine ball field maintenance such as dragging, and marking fields, keeping dugouts clean.
  • Picks up large items (white goods, tires, etc.) and litter. Empties litter cans;
  • Posts no parking signs in areas needing cleaned.
  • Power washes litter cans, oil spills and graffiti removal;
  • Provides special event support (cleaning areas before and after events), community day clean ups;
  • Shovels snow, rakes leaves, cuts grass, works hose on leaf truck, picks up bio-degradable bags;
  • Works in the shop area making minor repairs, stocking materials and cleaning equipment;
  • Performs related work as required.

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Ability to read and write and carry out simple written instructions; should have at least one year experience in related work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be able to use common hand tools; ability to follow oral instructions; ability to perform heavy manual labor daily; and must be able to work in all kinds of weather conditions. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Preferred Qualifications

High School Degree or GED; One year experience in grounds/landscape and/or custodial maintenance; good knowledge of Landscape standards and procedures; some vocational training as related to construction/maintenance field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possess the ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather.


This position requires successful completion of a criminal records background check and drug screening prior to employment.
