Strategic Communications Manager


The Strategic Communications Manager serves in the Office of Communications and Public Information as a senior member of the City’s communications team and is responsible for managing citywide strategic communications and departmental communications initiatives. The Manager reports to the Director of Communications and Public Information and supervises a Strategic Communications Planner and an Outreach Coordinator.

The Opportunity
  • Manages the City’s message strategy by developing communications plans and schedules based on the City’s communications needs and departmental requests;
  • Serves as a senior City spokesperson to customers and members of the news media;
  • Develops communications plans for complex, multi-faceted high profile internal and external citywide initiatives, projects, and events;
  • Manages special projects, including directing the work of a team or work group of City staff and/or contractors, preparing schedules, and administering project budgets;
  • Supervises communications planning performed by staff or consultants;
  • Coordinates with other City agencies, interest groups, and jurisdictions on communications and message strategy of projects, policies, and issues;
  • Reviews and provides comments and direction on the work of other communicators, acting as an internal consultant to the department and a mentor to other communicators;
  • Works with the City’s communicators to ensure City strategy and narrative is understood by employees and the community;
  • Provides expert counsel to senior management, professional colleagues and City Council members on communications strategy, messaging and planning across multiple program areas;
  • Represents the department or City; serves as an internal expert on panels, committees, and task forces; and proposes communications strategies in response to a variety of issues;
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Ideal Candidate

To qualify for this position, an applicant must have a bachelor's degree in journalism, English, marketing, communications, or a closely related field; five (5) years of experience in communications, media, public relations, or public information; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

To be considered an ideal candidate, the applicant should also have at least five years of full-time, professional experience in strategic communications for a complex organization, including ongoing experience in message strategy, news media relations, and staff supervision; fluency in written and spoken Spanish; and extensive experience performing the duties described in this posting.
