Job Description

The Washington Post's newsroom engineering team is looking for an empathetic full-stack engineer who would like to work closely with our newsroom, our product team and other engineering teams to build the next generation of newsroom data pipelines and support visual storytelling at the Post. Our ideal candidate is a creative problem-solver who is comfortable evaluating our processes and recommending changes. This position is remote-friendly for work in the US.

Who we are
  • The newsroom engineering team is an agile organization employing scrum methods to continuously build and deploy software applications that allow our newsroom to report on stories unreachable without technology.
  • We're an inclusive group of engineers from varied backgrounds focused on delivering value while maintaining several custom applications and their associated microservices.
  • Washington Post Engineering is a department of more than 500 people working to support The Post's world-class newsroom.

What you'll do
  • Develop and maintain several software applications that live at the edge of our newsroom.
  • React to newsroom requests during breaking news or live news situations to deliver new features or fix bugs quickly.
  • Plan sprints with our engineering team to shape our processes for delivering software more quickly, efficiently, and reliably.
  • Work closely with our partners in product and the newsroom to identify areas of growth, ship new features, and prioritize features and identify new areas for expansion.

About you
  • You can point to more than 3 years and ideally more than 5 years of high-level engineering work.
  • You have experience building and maintaining systems in production environments.
  • You're comfortable working with multiple teams, only some of whom you directly manage, to produce a coherent software stack.
  • You have empathy for the Post's reporters and editors who use our software to produce our daily report.
  • You would like to build tools for making sense of large data sets on newsroom deadlines while maintaining engineering rigor.
  • You have a predisposition towards testing, instrumentation and writing documentation.
  • You desire to work at a deeper level of abstraction than a single story or beat.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

The innovation doesn't end in the Newsroom - dozens of teams power The Washington Post. We are now hiring the next innovator - how will you Impact Tomorrow?
