Arlington County is currently recruiting for several opportunities for temporary seasonal employment with the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation. We are currently recruiting for instructors and/or coaching staff in our popular and growing programs. This announcement is specific to teaching or coaching for the Gymnastics program only. If you are interested in other teaching positions you must apply for those positions as well.

Arlington County Gymnastics is looking for reliable, enthusiastic, positive people who can work with children of all ages and adults. Our successful, well-established program offers gymnastics to both boys and girls starting from parent and tot classes through preschool and level classes based on the USA Gymnastics (USAG) program. Specialty programs include camps, birthday parties, special events, teens, adapted, and adults. Arlington Gymnastics also offers girls USAG Xcel competitive team and USAG Development Program competitive team (boys and girls). Prior gymnastics experience is a plus. Arlington Gymnastics will help train the right candidates and certify them in First Aid/CPR/AED and help with professional memberships. These programs are located at Barcroft Sports & Fitness Center: 4200 South Four Mile Run Drive near Shirlington and I-395.
  • Currently our program is looking for people experienced in any of the following areas:
    1. Gymnastics Instructors for all ages and skill levels;
    2. Recreational Classes (preschool, youth and adult)
    3. Competitive gymnastics coaches for boys and girls teams; and
    4. Adapted Gymnastics (participants with disabilities)
    5. Instructors needed for weekday evenings and weekends (both Saturday and Sunday)
Applications are being accepted for the following positions:
Recreation Instructor I starts at $18.58 per hour

This position is typically assigned to beginner-level classes, or classes where less technical expertise is required to effectively instruct class participants.

Recreation Instructor II starts at $22.03 per hour

This position is typically assigned to intermediate, or single-level classes. Concepts taught throughout the course are moderately complex.

Recreation Instructor III starts at $25.47 per hour

This position is typically assigned to advanced-level classes. Concepts taught throughout the course are complex. This position may also be assigned to teach therapeutic recreation courses or sections specifically designed for participants with disabilities. Subject matter taught may necessitate additional safety considerations by the instructor. Recreation Instructor III positions are expected to have the knowledge and ability to serve as a substitute instructor for many other classes within the general area of expertise.

Major Duties/Specific Tasks

  • Providing tailored Gymnastics instruction to student's needs while evaluating student performance;
  • Preparing for class instruction, lesson plans and curriculum;
  • Setting up equipment prior to class and securing equipment after class;
  • Inspecting equipment and reporting unsafe equipment to supervisor;
  • Recommending purchase of supplies and equipment; and
  • Completing required class paperwork, such as attendance reports.

Selection Criteria

Experience & Education:
Recreation Instructor I

High school diploma/GED plus 400 hours of technical experience* in Gymnastics.

Recreation Instructor II:

High school diploma/GED plus 800 hours of technical experience* in Gymnastics, of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor.

Recreation Instructor III:

High school diploma/GED plus 1200 hours of technical experience* in Gymnastics, of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor.

*Technical experience may come from a variety of sources, such as work experiences, volunteer experiences or formal athletic participation.

Substitution: Additional education may be substituted for experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with the following:
  • Involvement in a competitive or recreational gymnastics program;
  • Current or previous gymnastics instruction through coaching or teaching;
  • First Aid, CPR certifications and/or other gymnastics certifications;
  • Working with children of all ages.

Special Requirements
A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment, which may include the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
