Summary

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Capitol Power Plant, Utility Services Division, Distribution High Voltage Branch, Power Systems Section. The selectee will be responsible for operating and maintaining diesel powered generators that provide electricity for emergency lighting and emergency elevator power to the Capitol Complex buildings in the event of a general power outage.

Responsibilities

The individual selected for this position will perform the following duties:

• Establishes programs and procedures for operation and inspection to keep the generators and support systems in reliable operating condition.
• Examines, analyzes, and tests equipment and support systems to determine potential problems and to determine what maintenance and repair work is needed and how and when it will be performed.
• Troubleshoots, overhauls, and rebuilds generators and their mechanical, electrical components. Disassembles, reassembles, overhauls, and makes adjustments according to specifications.
• Plans the sequence of tasks, selects and safely uses the proper tools and equipment. Follows specifications and instructions in manuals and guides so that clearances, fittings, adjustments, and settings are accurate within prescribed clearances and tolerances. Uses standard and specialized test equipment such as digital multi-meters, AC/DC power supplies, load banks, various micrometers and dial indicators, pressure gauges and regulators, and technical information such as blueprints, schematics, manuals, and maintenance modifications. Completes work in accordance with existing guidelines or instructions.
• Tests the equipment components and systems according to prescribed schedules. Applies electrical loads. Confirms equipment start up. Tests for full range of equipment function and provision of power to supported systems (e.g., building lighting and elevators). Operates panels, switches, fuel systems, and controls. Monitors operations using automated systems.
• Provides technical direction to other mechanics when they are assigned to perform work on emergency electric power plants.
• Requisitions supplies, equipment, materials and tools required for the operation of the power plants. Sees that they are properly used, stored and maintained. Maintains records in automated system such as work orders, work performed, and materials used.
• Must follow all relevant safety rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures. Must utilize knowledge of and must comply with all OSHA safety and environmental rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Provides or receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure that all safety practices and equipment are fully utilized. Must ensure the use of any required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
