Summary

These positions are located in the Architect of the Capitol, Library Buildings and Grounds, Maintenance Branch, Electrical Section. The selectee will serve as an Electronics Mechanic involved in constructing, repairing, adjusting, connecting, and maintaining a variety of very complex state of the art systems employed in comprehensive Fire/Safety and Support essential for the Library Buildings.

TOUR OF DUTY: Night/3rd Shift - 9:30 pm to 6:00 am, Tuesday - Saturday;

If selected at the WG-11, selectee will have non-competitive promotion potential to the WG-12. Duties quoted at WG-12 level.

The Electronics Mechanic:

Installs and Tests Complex Computerized Automated Fire Protection Equipment
  • Installs or assists contractors to install new systems or upgrades of existing fire protection devices and systems. Installs new devices and/or relocates existing devices in conduit or flexible raceways as applicable. Preserves, upkeeps, corrects and regulates mechanisms and assemblies of the numerous systems that may be assigned. Aligns and balances analog circuits, tests analog and digital circuits, and replaces faulty electronic parts and various solid state devices.
  • Assists with the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of low voltage wiring associated with electronically controlled door hardware being operated by the fire alarm system.
  • Provides technical support to Fire Protection Engineers and other Superintendent's office staff in solving problems/breakdowns found in test programs. Isolates specific faults in the automated test apparatuses or the unit under test and completes the required repairs. Performs bench and field tests and prepares standard performance reports.
  • Follows all relevant safety rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures. Must utilize knowledge of and must comply with all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner.
  • Performs connection, test, and restoration work on fire protection systems and/or earlier assigned systems requiring major adjustments. Provides expertise on the latest and most technologically complex electronic systems. Examines, troubleshoots, overhauls, and tests electronic equipment and complete operational systems involved with an assortment of construction, maintenance, repair, and renovation projects. Performs tests, installs, diagnose and repairs security doors that integrate into the fire alarm system.
  • Troubleshoots the cause of operational problems on novel or improved systems when technical specifications are inadequate. Identifies problems in designs and guidelines.

Inspections, Maintenance, Troubleshooting and Repair
  • Maintains, tests, troubleshoots and repairs diverse vendor smoke and heat fire alarm systems and devices. Assists contractors to locate and install system components ranging in complexity from the older electrical and analog devices to the newer moderately complex digital computer controlled systems.
  • Responds to emergency calls to return alarm systems to an on-line status as quickly as possible. Works from verbal instructions, work orders, blueprints, schematics, maintenance schedules, and inspection schedules to perform maintenance, diagnose system or equipment malfunctions, make repairs, and replace equipment as required. Evaluates the fire alarm system module, component, device and circuit failures. Isolates the system failure and replaces the defective part or component, minimizing downtime and restoring circuit integrity in a timely manner.
  • Provides support for nightly sprinkler and fire alarm testing, additions to, upgrading of, and maintenance and repair of fire alarm equipment. Assists with the changeover from hardwired systems to an addressable, multiplex system. Install new circuits and communication loop routes and connections.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
