Job Announcement

Works on an athletic field crew and participates in a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks such as litter and debris removal, snow removal, synthetic and natural turf maintenance, and possible irrigation repair county-wide. Leads the daily activity of self and other staff in the absence of the Maintenance Crew Chief. Maintains daily logs of work performed, equipment maintenance and other required reports in the absence of the Maintenance Crew Chief. Drives a county vehicle in the absence of the Maintenance Crew Chief and as operational needs require to complete job tasks or review the work site. Operates groomers, utility vehicles, tractors, and multiple kinds of attachments in the daily maintenance and makes a variety of repairs to synthetic turf. Works on special projects for athletic field improvements and/or maintenance for natural or synthetic turf athletic fields. May assist in applying pesticides, fertilizers, seed, and other turf care products. May assist operating seeders, sprayers and aerators as required. Calibrates, maintains, and repairs equipment. Keeps and maintains records and reports. Works u nder the direction of the Maintenance Crew Chief and/or Turf Crew Assistant Manager.

  • General maintenance and repair of machinery;
  • Inspects and approves work of Maintenance Workers;
  • Provides guidance and training to Maintenance Workers;
  • Transports crew and equipment to work site;
  • May lead a crew in absence of Maintenance Crew Chief;
  • Inspects, and reviews work of a crew engaged in a variety of basic maintenance, construction and grounds keeping activities;
  • May Lead grass cutting, sodding, seeding, and fertilizing activities;
  • Completes daily and preventive maintenance reports;
  • Trains staff;
  • Implements safety procedures;
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
  • Reports and monitors unsafe working conditions;
  • Complies with safety competencies.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of small engine equipment;
  • Knowledge of single axle dump truck, trailer, utility bucket truck, snow plow, spreader, tank truck, water truck and pickup truck;
  • Working knowledge of and the ability to use methods, tools and equipment commonly used in maintenance, construction, and grounds keeping activities;
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices;
  • Basic knowledge of computers;
  • Ability to lead other employees in a variety of activities, maintain records, and prepare reports;
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions;
  • Ability to perform activities requiring manual dexterity;
  • Ability to perform basic data entry;
  • Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.;
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor;
  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees and supervisors.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two or more years of experience maintaining natural and synthetic turf athletic fields.
  • Experience in hauling and transporting equipment.
  • Knowledge of and experience in performing synthetic turf maintenance using a variety of equipment and attachments.
  • Knowledge of making artificial turf repairs using a variety of equipment and techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience operating natural turf maintenance equipment.
  • General knowledge of Fairfax County park locations.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's license (Required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services registry check, driver's license check, and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly, and work in variable weather conditions performing physical labor.
  • Ability to traverse uneven ground.
  • Ability to bend, twist, turn, stand, sit and stoop.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicle and trailer.
  • Ability to operate grounds equipment.
  • All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
