"Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Data Science for Understanding of Disease Spread

The George Mason University, Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (GGS), in the College of Science, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position beginning as early as Fall 2021. The project, supported by the National Science Foundation's Evolution and Ecology of Infectious Diseases (EEID) Program, is jointly conducted by Drs. Taylor Anderson, Andreas Züfle, and Hamdi Kavak of GMU. The Postdoc will be mentored by the project PIs in all aspects of their career development including scientific research, writing, communication, career planning, teaching and mentoring, and collaboration. The project abstract can be found using this link . The duration of the position is one year and can be extended up to three years via one-year extensions.

Responsibilities: The primary job responsibilities of this position consist of: * Leading data-driven research to better understand the spread of infectious respiratory diseases; * Publishing research papers at top-tier journals and conferences; * Disseminating and promoting research results at relevant venues and events; * Creating and managing a data repository of related data sources relevant to disease spread, human response to disease, mobility, and socio-demographics; * Supervising research assistants and interns and collaborating with fellow scholars.

Required Qualifications: * Completion of a Ph.D. in computer science, data science, computational sciences, or closely related field prior to the first day of the appointment; * Extensive experience in data mining; * Strong programming skills; * Excellent written communication skills demonstrated by strong publication record.

Preferred Qualifications: * Strong programming experience in Python and Java; * Experience in data management and databases; * Geospatial analytics skills; * Experience in agent-based modeling; * A track record that demonstrates the ability to work well with interdisciplinary research teams."
