University Ombudsperson
George Mason University is seeking a professional communicator who is enthusiastic and thoughtful to fulfill the important role of University Ombudsperson. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.
Position Summary: The University Ombudsperson is responsible for assisting individuals and groups in determining options to help resolve conflicts or concerns and bring systemic matters to the attention of the university for resolution. The Ombudsperson is an advocate for fairness who is a source of information and referral and assists in the resolution of concerns and critical situations.
The function of the Ombudsperson is independent of existing administrative structures and reports to the university Chief of Staff. The Ombudsperson will develop the resources and tools to aid university constituents in fostering a culture of respect, collaboration and mediation. Essential functions of the position include dispute resolution, consultation and referral, campus resource and campus outreach.
The office will serve as a neutral place where faculty can talk in confidence about issues, concerns or disputes in a confidential environment for fair and consistent treatment in the university community.
Required Qualifications * Master's degree in a related field or education and experience that equates to the advanced degree; * Must have the ability to establish and promote the Ombudsperson Office and effectively engage with faculty and administration; * Three to five years of Ombuds experience, along with creating, managing and delivering training and educational programs (higher education environment preferred).
