Responsibilities

  • Respond as a member of a firefighting crew to all types of fires or other emergencies.
  • Operate hose lines, ladders, and hydrants to control and extinguish fires.
  • Respond to emergencies and administer immediate medical treatment using established procedures and appropriate medical devices.
  • Assess patient status and baseline vital signs to determine priority for care.
  • Use vehicle radios, computers, or telephonic equipment to communicate status and receive instructions.
  • Perform general maintenance tasks on firefighting apparatus and equipment to ensure it is readily available for use.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 72-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • Certificate requirement for GS-05 applicants must be obtained within twelve (12) months of appointment: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Hazardous Materials Operations levels.
  • Certificate requirement for GS-05 applicants must be obtained within eighteen (18) months of appointment: Airport Firefighter level.
  • Certificate requirement for GS-05 applicants must be obtain and maintain a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card within 12 months of appointment.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes assist with lifting firefighting equipment, climbing standard ladders to assist with rescue, assist crew members with firefighting techniques. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes the use of firefighting and fire prevention techniques and methods such as performing search and rescue; use of firefighting equipment, performing Basic Life Support (BLS) functions, to include stabilizing a patient, performing CPR, using an AED, airway management and treating for shock. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Specialized Experience GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes working as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Respond to fires using firefighting and rescue techniques, equipment and extinguishing agents utilizing trained knowledge of firefighter theory and tools; contaminated and/or hazardous areas requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks to include: building ventilation, fire extinguishment, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) apparatus operation, protective performance techniques as needed in the event to protect life and property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent GS-05 (GS-04), GS-06 (GS-05), and GS-07 (GS-06).

Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and minimum qualification requirements prescribed by OPM within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Education

2. DoD Certificates and NREMT License :
  • You MUST submit a copy of the following certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) AND a State or National Registry EMT License . If your application package does not contain proof of having these certificates and license, your application will be marked as incomplete and you WILL NOT receive consideration for this position.
  • GS-06 Certificate requirements: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter HazMat Awareness and HazMat Operations levels (in accordance with DoD Instruction 6055.06 and DoD Manual 6055.6M), Driver/Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator ARFF. Additionally the employee must maintain a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card.
  • GS-07 Certificate Requirement: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, Airport Firefighter in accordance with DoD Instruction 6055.06 and DoD Manual 6055.6M. Driver/Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator ARFF, Driver/Operator Aerial and EMT-Basic. Additionally the employee must maintain a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card.
  • If you are a current federal employee and do not have one of the required certificates due to the DoD F&ES Certification Program delay - You may submit a provisional certificate, memorandum from the Fire Chief requesting the certificates, and/or another document showing completion of the course.
