Engineer, IT, QA Engineer
Full Time
The nonprofit American Press Institute is hiring a full-time developer to support the institute's Metrics for News application. This position is based in Arlington, VA, but can also be done remotely if operating on US time zones. The Highlights Metrics for News is an ever-evolving product that contextualizes web analytics for news publishers small and large all across the world. We currently work with more than 60 newsrooms to help staff at all levels make better content strategy decisions using web analytics - and to improve the overall culture surrounding analytics. Metrics for News is more than a web application. It is a program that is at its core focused on educating and empowering everyone in a newsroom to improve content strategy and better serve audiences. The Senior Web Applications Engineer will be responsible for maintaining the existing codebase for Metrics for News (which is in vanilla PHP and SASS with aspirations for a more streamlined template-based solution), writing and optimizing SQL, and developing custom solutions using JavaScript, HTML/CSS, PHP and AWS. This position will report to the Director of Metrics for News and work closely with the Product and Technology Manager of Metrics for News. The Metrics for News team is small but mighty, and has worked entirely remotely for more than two years. The web applications engineer will report to the Director of Metrics for News, but everyone on the team influences the product roadmap. Unlike a typical nonprofit team, Metrics for News iterates quickly. In the last year alone, we have introduced three features that drastically improved Metrics for News, and we have recently rolled out an entirely new product focused on source auditing that the Senior Web Applications Engineer will contribute to as well. We are also currently expanding our natural language processing and artificial intelligence capacities within the application, and the engineer will have the opportunity to work with those technologies. We are a lean team that moves and pivots quickly, but we also are an organization that highly values work-life balance. Every American Press Institute employee gets 20 days of paid time off in addition to 9 major holidays. Experience and qualifications We encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities. We also know there are excellent candidates who might not have all the skills and experience that we have outlined. If that describes you, please apply and tell us about yourself and share your ideas for this role. Our ideal candidate has the following skills and experience: At least 5 years of experience working with PHP and MySQL At least 5 years of experience working with Amazon Web Services, especially CodeCommit, EC2, Elastic Beanstalk, RDS and S3 Familiarity with Adobe Omniture/Analytics and Google Analytics APIs preferred but not required Strong background in Git Excellent organizational and communication skills Excellent time-management skills Ability to work collaboratively with internal staff and many external partners Familiarity with the news business and current issues affecting the news industry is helpful, but not necessary This is a full-time position. Candidates may work remotely, or from API's office in Arlington, VA. Salary and benefits This is a full-time position with a salary range of $75,000 to $92,500 commensurate with skills and experience. It includes the following benefits: 20 days of paid time off, plus major holidays (9 per year) Medical, dental and vision plan 401(k) plan with a generous matching policy Medical and/or dependent flexible spending plan Generous family leave policies Employer-paid life insurance, short-term and long-term insurance policies Pre-tax mass transit plan Professional development opportunities (for example, conference attendance or stipends for course enrollment) Reimbursement for phone bills and job-related travel expenses About the American Press Institute The American Press Institute is a nonprofit organization based in Arlington, VA, that leads and inspires innovation in the news industry.
