Building Engineer

The George Mason University, Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR) within the College of Science is seeking an experienced and responsible Building Engineer to work on mechanical, electrical, and associated control systems in the Biomedical Research Laboratory (BRL). About the Position:

The selected applicant will be part of a team that is responsible for making sure the equipment in the building is running smoothly including: air handling and specialized HVAC systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, emergency generators and lighting.

The selected applicant, once trained, may share "on-call" shifts during which he or she must respond to building emergencies and alerts outside of regular business hours.

Responsibilities:


  • Monitoring, maintaining, repairing, and operating mechanical, electrical, and associated control systems of the BRL;
  • Maintaining records;
  • Performing general maintenance.


Required Qualifications:


  • Must be detail-oriented, conscientious, and motivated with strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
  • Must have knowledge of the principles and practices of facilities operations;
  • Basic computer skills;
  • Ability to effectively read and interpret blueprints;
  • Must have a general knowledge of plant maintenance;
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and to solve problems quickly;
  • Must possess a valid driver's license;
  • Ability to safely and independently lift up to 50 pounds;
  • Because of the nature of the research conducted, employees working in this facility have special conditions to remain employed. These include, but are not limited to:
    • Successfully completing background investigations;
    • Drug and alcohol screening;
    • Attending required training;
    • Participating in the medical surveillance program;
    • Receiving preventative vaccinations;
    • Continuous adherence to all policies and procedures.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Formal training in the trades such as trade schools, factory training courses, high school vocational classes or equivalent;
  • Experience in facilities maintenance;
  • Experience with Siemens building automation system or equivalent;
  • Progressive experience in the electrical or HVAC trades;
  • Experience maintaining laboratory facilities.
