Laboratory Support, Clinical Proteomics Lab

The George Mason University, Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine in the College of Science, is looking for enthusiastic and energetic individuals for multiple part-time Laboratory Support job openings. About the Center: The Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine in the College of Science has a mission to: a) create new technologies and make basic science discoveries in the field of disease pathogenesis, and b) apply these discoveries and technologies to create and implement strategies for disease prevention, early diagnosis, and individualized therapy. The primary emphasis of our disease research is cancer and infectious diseases. Our CAP/CLIA accredited laboratory bridges translational research and clinical diagnostic testing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the CAP/CLIA laboratory is providing COVID testing services, in addition to on-going research.

About the position: This position is in the clinical proteomics laboratory and will support the laboratory in providing COVID-19 testing and/or proteomic research. The Laboratory Support staff will work somewhat independently to log-in specimens, communicate with couriers, clients, and lab staff, perform inventory, general equipment monitoring, and other clerical and technical functions. The selected candidates will work in a highly regulated clinical laboratory environment.

The duration of the appointment is 1 year and subject to renewal, dependent on satisfactory performance and continuation of funding.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include specimen receipt, monitoring equipment temperatures, waste disposal, monitoring inventory, and clerical functions, commensurate with a high school graduate level. Specific tasks include receipt and accessioning of COVID-19 diagnostic specimens, freezer and refrigerator temperature monitoring, communicating with collection site staff, couriers, and laboratory staff and clients. The Laboratory Support staff will also communicate daily operational issues with lab staff, managers, consultants, laboratory director, and medical director.

Required Qualifications: * Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position; * A minimum of 5 years work experience; * Experience in monitoring equipment and inventory; * Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs for a distance of 30 feet; * Proficiency in the use of personal computer, word-processing applications; dependable individual with attention to detail; * Excellent communication skills in oral and written English.

Preferred Qualifications: * Experience in a regulated work environment; * Knowledge of medical/scientific terms; * Ability to work rotating days and/or shifts (day/evening).
