Boeing Research and Technology (BR&T) is looking for a highly capable Senior Composite Structure Analysis Engineer (Level 4) to join our team in the greater St. Louis area in Berkeley, Missouri. We are seeking those with exceptional leadership and teaming skills in addition to communication and technical skills.A' This role entails leading both the development and application of advanced composite structure analysis methods and tools.A' The candidate will have experience developing research & development projects with both internal and Department of Defense customers, and identifying emerging areas for future research investment.A' The ideal candidate will be considered a subject matter expert in Airframe Structural Analysis, and will be called upon for support by multiple projects/sites within Structures Technology. The qualified candidate will have demonstrated experience in developing and executing R&D programs, proposal and research program development, and customer engagement.A' Experience with state-of-the-art and emerging advanced composite structural analysis methods is required including standard linear and non-linear applications in FEA tools to model damage initiation and propagation in composite structure.A' An understanding of traditional thermoset tape and fabric composite structural behavior as well as thermoplastic, braided, woven, and through-thickness reinforced composite behavior is required.A' Knowledge of airframe certification requirements and certification of novel structural configurations and materials is also needed. Our Structures Technology team is focused on discovering, developing, and transitioning innovative structures technology into Boeing products, focusing on advanced structural architectures and design concepts. We advance the state of the art in methods and tools for structural analysis. We accelerate the qualification and certification of new materials and structures. Our highly capable engineers excel in a team environment of challenge and opportunity on multiple projects, and partnering with Boeing business units, government customers, global suppliers, and universities to rapidly mature key technologies to production readiness. Position Responsibilities: Finite Element Modeling and detailed structural analysis and sizing of composite structural hardware Perform stability and buckling analysis as required. Applies advanced knowledge of composite material systems; such as, laminated carbon epoxy composites, thermoplastic composites, ceramic matrix composites, as well as, emerging additive materials to support advanced structural concepts and analysis Performs system level trades, design optimization and detailed piece-part evaluation. Interface with other disciplines to understand design intent and overall system requirements Serves as a subject matter expert in Composite Structural Analysis, and will be called upon for support by multiple projects/sites within Structures Technology Plans and leads investigation of emerging technologies to develop future product designs, and structural life enhancement concepts to improve products Principal Investigator on R&D development projects, with responsibility to maintain schedules, budgets, communicate to Senior Leadership and Internal/External Customers Coordinates with other engineering groups, customers, and regulatory agencies to establish the productA cents € (TM) s environment and certification requirements Guides product design and verifies structural integrity by using analytical methods, finite element models/simulations and other analysis tools throughout the product lifecycle to develop the structural environment, characteristics and performance Develops analytical processes/tools to improve effectiveness, quality and efficiency of the development effort Develops test plans and configurations, supports test execution and analyzes/reports test results to validate and verify systems and components meet requirements and specifications Mentors and coaches earlier career engineers Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts as well as advanced job practices, techniques, and standards. Recognized as a job expert within the company Works on complex technical problems and provides solutions which are innovative and ingenious Initiates assignments and determines and pursues courses of action necessary to obtain desired results Work is checked through consultation and agreement with others rather than formal review by a superior Develops advanced technical ideas and guides their development into final product. Acts as advisor to management and customers on advanced technical research studies This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at the listed location. This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship. An interim and/or final US Secret clearance Post-Start is required. Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience): Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry 5+ years of experience with aerospace stress analysis/structural analysis 5+ years of experience working with vehicle level Finite Element Models (FEM) to perform engineering analysis including linear, non-linear (material, stability, contact, etc.), and modal solutions Experience with one or more of the following finite element analysis codes: Nastran, Abaqus, LS-Dyna, Optistruct Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience): Experience with customer engagement and development of R&D programs 5+ years of experience with analysis of composites and/or non-metallic materials 5+ years of experience working in a lead role responsible for planning, organizing, and leading personnel to solve complex technical problems and assist with complex tasks related to model creation, check-out, and solution validation 5+ years of experience working with Department of Defense customers specifically in structural design, test, and certification requirements Experience as a project principal investigator for new development projects Experience with airframe certification requirements and processes with experience in novel composite structural configurations and materials Experience using excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with leaders and colleagues in an engineering environment. Verbal presentations and graphical reports observations gathered from Finite Element Models related to general airframe structural behavior, load path viability and optimization, and overall structural concept feasibility for air vehicle configurations Experience creating, manipulating or using data from finite element models. Expert level familiarity with Abaqus, Nastran, OptiStruct or LS-Dyna Ability to query and extract geometry using NX or CATIA Experience leading, coaching and mentoring others benefiting their technical skills and professional development Experience developing and maintaining cooperative partnerships with customer counterparts Providing inputs to project planning, estimates, and performance reporting related to modeling tasks Assesses the quality of model results using classical/textbook analysis methods, basic hand calculations and engineering judgment Expert experience with compiled languages (eg C/C++, Fortran), and/or scripting languages (eg Python, visual basic, Matlab) Typical Education/Experience: Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (eg Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (eg PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard. Relocation: This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility.
