Nature and Variety of Work Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill multiple vacant Equipment Operator II positions, grade A-15, within the Office of Highway Maintenance, Road Maintenance, and Construction Division. This is skilled craft work which requires safe and efficient operation of mechanized equipment and vehicles. Incumbents perform manual tasks assigned by the supervisor in connection with road construction, and highway maintenance. The work is inspected periodically for safe and efficient operation. Incumbents may serve in the capacity of training subordinate equipment operators as part of the Department's Equipment Training Program. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS This work involves exposure to hazards, risks, or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, irritant chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to the elements; requiring intermittent standing, walking, stooping, and climbing. Incumbents must be physically able to regularly and repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. Incumbents must wear and maintain a uniform and/or safety equipment such as hard hats, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, and gloves. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the incumbent's supervisor based on the position assigned. DPW&T employees are considered "Essential" and are required to participate in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program, during natural and man-made disasters, and during special operations, as assigned. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other employees are granted administrative leave. Examples of Work * Operates all vehicles and/or equipment designated for an Equipment Operator II; level, which are used for construction and/or maintenance work projects. These include but not limited to, asphalt distributor truck, backhoe/tractor/loader, crane/dragline/clamshell, dozer, fuel truck, gradall, mobile concrete mixer, motor grader, root pruner, rubber-tired loader (2 cy. or larger), tandem wheel dump truck, track loader (2 cy. or larger), vac-all, tractor and trailer; * Operates all vehicles and/or equipment designated for an Equipment Operator I level, which are used for construction and/or maintenance work projects. These include but aren't limited to, single axle dump truck, 5-ton roller, leaf vacuum, tractor/mower (sickle bar, rotary, flail), asphalt distributor hose, belt loader, bucket truck, chipper, loader, radial arm mower, rubber tire loader (less than 2 cy.), skid loader, street flusher, street paver, stump cutter, tree trunk, and 12-ton vibratory roller; * Performs interior/exterior cleaning and safety inspection of vehicles; * Assists with preventive maintenance; * Assists with the training of lower level Equipment Operators or other semi-skilled employees; * Performs duties of a general laborer in maintenance and construction when not operating equipment; * Uses traffic control techniques to control high/low speed vehicular traffic movement; * Maintains tools, equipment and vehicles for the purpose of ensuring availability of equipment; * Maintains records and prepares reports through the completion of daily work logs and work order forms; * Participates as an essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities; and, * Performs other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general, occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work. Minimum Qualifications One (1) year experience as an Equipment Operator I with Prince Georges County Government or completion of a standard grade school course and two (2) years of experience operating light to heavy power equipment; plus a valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with mandatory airbrake and tanker endorsements required upon appointment to perform job-related duties and responsibilities. Candidate must complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment/vehicles associated with this class of work. EACH APPLICANT MUST INCLUDE INFORMATION, WHICH CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION. Additional Information CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: * Submit a copy of Class "A" license with airbrake and tanker endorsements together with a current DOT physical certification card; and * Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration driving record. Upon selection, the candidates must: * Must complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment vehicles associated with this class. * Must meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency. * Incumbents must be able to wear and use Agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties. * Incumbents must be willing to respond to emergency service calls on a 24-hour basis. * Be willing to participate in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program, during natural and man-made disasters, and during special operations as assigned. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other employees are granted administrative leave. DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligibles which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
