Industry Advisor

George Mason University, Career Services is seeking two enthusiastic and energetic individuals for the position of Industry Career Advisor in Science or Health. About the Position:

The Industry Advisor will support the center's industry model by engaging in employer development, presenting career education workshops, advising on job/internship search strategies, and bridging the gap between college and career as a specialist focusing on either Science or Health industries. Serve on cross-functional teams, execute strategic plan goals and maintain key liaison relationships with University constituents. The Industry Advisor provides services and resources which support Mason's diverse student community in overcoming barriers to career development and advancement, including attracting and promoting employers committed to equity and inclusion.

Responsibilities:

Individual and Group Career Advising:

  • Provide industry specific advising to students and alumni;
  • Serve as the Center expert within assigned industry area(s), maintaining current information on recruiting practices, timelines, and industry trends;
  • Educate and prepare students on the specifics of their job/internship search strategy and graduate school application process, including document review, networking techniques, interview prep, and salary negotiation;
  • Assist students in leveraging the use of social media and other technology in their search strategy;
  • Present educational workshops (in-person and virtually) on a variety of career topics and collaborate with staff to create, customize, and execute employer/alumni/student networking events and educational panels;
  • Consider the needs of academic stakeholders, particularly College of Science and/or College of Health and Human Services and provide industry-specific programming that meets the interests of Mason students and employers;
  • Travel to the Mason Sci-Tech campus, the Mason Arlington campus and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation is required.


Employer Development:

  • Identify, target, and initiate employer relationships within assigned industry areas in consultation with members of the Industry Advising and Employer Development team and academic stakeholders, particularly College of Science and/or the College of Health and Human Services;
  • Increase internship and full-time recruiting opportunities by promoting Mason students and alumni to local, regional, and national employers;
  • Contact employers by phone, email and web-based technologies; host and/or visit local businesses, government agencies, and organizations to support their recruiting efforts at Mason;
  • Build and maintain strong employer relationships through regular communication and engagement in Center/Mason programs, events, and services;
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of recruiting and market trends to share regularly with Career Center staff members.


Cross-Functional Teams and University Initiatives:

  • Serve on various cross-functional teams to promote the vision and direction of University Career Services;
  • Contribute to strategic planning in order to evolve Center services and programs;
  • Represent Mason and the Center in local and national professional associations and conferences in order to stay current with industry standards and changes, revise programs to reflect trends, and increase the Center's visibility among professionals in the field;
  • Participate in University Life (student affairs division) and George Mason University activities and committees providing representation of the Career Center on community issues.


Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field of study;
  • Demonstrated experience in a higher education setting counseling and/or advising students in the following categories: career, graduate school admission, internship, and job searches;
  • In lieu of experience in a higher education setting, demonstrated experience in Human Resources Talent Acquisition, specifically recruitment on college campuses;
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Collaborative and team-oriented work style and the ability to successfully manage multiple commitments and thrive in a changing, dynamic environment;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in designing and delivering presentations; and use of technology to innovate and make work more efficient (e.g., MS Teams, MS Planner and Zoom);
  • Working knowledge of career services management software (e.g., Handshake);
  • Ability to assess and report outcomes;
  • Demonstrated commitment to eliminating barriers to economic and social mobility.
