Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs

The George Mason University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) invites applications for the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs position. About the Position: The Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) will oversee the tasks and functions related to undergraduate academic affairs, including but not limited to 1) overseeing the policies and procedures related to enrollment, registration, degree progress, and conferral; 2) organizing the management and response as well as the procedures related to student appeal of undergraduate academic policies; 3) developing refined or new policies, processes or procedures in response to emergent needs of the College or University; and 4) serve as the CHSS point person for Advance, Transfer VA, INTO Mason as well as the point person for BAM (accelerated Master's) and other initiatives requiring the development and maintenance of pathways to CHSS degrees. The Assistant Dean supervises the Senior Academic Affairs Coordinators to assure that these tasks and functions are carried out in a timely fashion, and in a clear and consistent manner.

Responsibilities: * Supervise request coordinators and assist with review of student requests, including exceptions to standard university policies and appeals; * Oversee and conduct regular review of all published policies, procedures and forms utilized by undergraduate Academic Affairs for accuracy and updates; * Serve as a liaison between the College and the Office of the Registrar and/or any other relevant parties regarding changes in policies; * Coordinate bachelor accelerated Masters pathways as well as Transfer VA and Advance pathways; * Serve as point of contact for CHSS-prefixed courses and learning communities; * Coordinate the collection and analysis of data related to student registration, course offerings and registration, and enrollment according to the strategic plans and needs of the College and University; * Oversee the regular assessment of the goals and objectives of the undergraduate academic affairs activities of the CHSS Academic Affairs office as well as serve as the university's assessment point person for the undergraduate programs across the College; * Represent the College on university committees as needed.

Required Qualifications * Master's degree; * Experience in higher education; * The ability to interpret and apply academic standards and the ability to communicate complex policies and procedures to students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders; * Ability to articulate and represent unit interests in discussions and negotiations with multiples stakeholders and constituents; * Ability to work effectively with diverse populations; * Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; * Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; * Familiarity with FERPA and other state and national laws pertaining to student privacy and the responsible management of data.

Preferred Qualifications * Master's degree in a Humanities or Social Science discipline; * Well-organized and detail-oriented; * Experience in higher education administration, student services, and/or policy; * Supervisory experience and attention to the professional development of staff; * Experience using technological systems and platforms related to student data and analytics; * Experience with diverse student populations and/or with diversity initiatives.

Academic Affairs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences The mission of CHSS Undergraduate Academic Affairs is to address the academic needs of undergraduate students in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, including the recruitment and orientation of new students, the support of advising in the college's constituent academic units, outreach to students, and review and response to student requests for exception to academic policies. The office is also responsible for the development and periodic review of college-level academic policies and procedures, responding to questions and concerns about policies by students, faculty and other members of the university community, and working with our partner units across campus to ensure high quality student services.
